label by selection.

I have a shp file of roads that was designed by putting in tons of short road segments.

if i use labeling each segment is labeled which is 10 times too much.

i would think it would be possible to put in individual labels by picking a pt and linking to the individual segment object data but so far i have not been able to figure out how to do that scanning the web and through the help file.

if it is possible i would gratly appreciate assistance. if not, it would be a great wish list feature.

thanks, alex

If you are using the 2012 release, you have the option to label via FDO (as you are), and then export out to a text layer, which is standard annotation.  Those annotation can be manually thinned.  This video (http://screencast.com/t/Z9pZumkdZl4) shows the process there, which might be of some help.  Otherwise, you might want to do some clearup to reduce the number of segments, if feasible.

Hi Nate,

The URL you listed for Screencast comes back as not found.  Can you possibly re-post the URL?  Also, for Screencast, do you need to create an account to view the videos?

Thanks,
