how to get started with Map?

I am a SIT (surveyor in training) and a 10 year AutoCAD veteran. I have Map
5 and would like to get started building a GIS of the area I work in. Can
anyone recommend how to get started? I am the "computer expert" where I
work and no one in the area is utilizing Map like they could be, and I would
like to be the first. Thank you for all who respond

Greetings fellow surveyor. I would say that the first coverage's you would
want to secure would be parcels, streets, and survey monuments.(What coordinate
system are you going to be working in)? Will you be data sharing? Does
the county you're in have a GIS? You may be able to purchase coverage's
you're lacking. There is alot more to planning a GIS than just creating
the drawing. I highly recommend going through the on-line tutorials - the
time you'll save down the road will be your reward. You really need to
sit down with powers that be and plan the goals your company would like
to achieve using their GIS. Just as you would plan for a  field survey
you'll need to plan some sort of mission for securing data etc... I could
go on and on but I won't.

Good luck!

There are a number of getting started articles on Autodesk PointA. They may
or may not be helpful... depends on what you know and what you are trying to
do.

Thanks to all those that responded. I am in the Texas panhandle. I think
the coordinate system we would be using would be the SPC system (Texas
North) in our area. I also have access to free digital orthoquads and 7.5'
quads from www.tnris.org which I have been downloading. That has been my
only real experience with Map, everything you download from Texas Natural
Resourse Information Server is in UTM metric so I set that up and have about
half the county downloaded. I think I'll do like ya'll suggested and start
with the tutorials on Point A. I know one big question I have is how do you
have multiple drawings with multiple coord. systems go into one project and
make everything line up like it's suppose to?

Thanks

Thomas,

There are also a couple of books on the market for Map users. The 'local'
Autodesk guru, David Walsh, is a coauthor of the one that I purchased a
couple years ago. I hope that he and his colleagues have a new version in
the works by now.
