Greetings fellow surveyor. I would say that the first coverage's you would
want to secure would be parcels, streets, and survey monuments.(What coordinate
system are you going to be working in)? Will you be data sharing? Does
the county you're in have a GIS? You may be able to purchase coverage's
you're lacking. There is alot more to planning a GIS than just creating
the drawing. I highly recommend going through the on-line tutorials - the
time you'll save down the road will be your reward. You really need to
sit down with powers that be and plan the goals your company would like
to achieve using their GIS. Just as you would plan for a field survey
you'll need to plan some sort of mission for securing data etc... I could
go on and on but I won't.
Good luck!

I am a SIT (surveyor in training) and a 10 year AutoCAD

Can
anyone recommend how to get started? I am the "computer expert"
where I
work and no one in the area is utilizing Map like they could be, and
I would
like to be the first. Thank you for all who respond
