Help Exporting Shape files

If you can export a database file in map3 to a shape file but then the same file cannot be exported in map5 AND then you save back to map3 and the file transfers again as if everything is okay but trying back in map5 still doesn't work...where does the problem lie.
Thank you - John

Hi John,

I am not sure what you mean by "trying back in Map
5 doesn't work".  Can you elaborate?  Are you getting error messages
in Map 5?

In Map 5, .dbf files are imported as object
data.  You can then export the object data to an external file if necessary
using the "convert object data to database links" option under the Map
menu.

Hi Wendy,
Thanks for responding. My problem has been semi determined to be a corrupted file, however i fail to see the logic in that answer. I am able to save my map5 drawing as a map3 drawing then i can open that drawing in map3 and export to a shape file, the process works completely database key and all. I then reopen same drawing in map5 try to export and map5 thinks the database is changed or moved, it must really think that it is just changed since exporting only the key data will actually work. where is the real problem and whats the work around? other than continue to transfer back to map3?
thanks
John

Hi John,

It may be that the directory structure for the
location of the external database has changed while you were moving between Map
3 and Map 5.   Are Map 5 and Map 3 on the same computer?

What kind of database are you using?

Happy Friday Wendy,
I leave my database file in the same directory and the Map file stays in the same place also. Both files keep their names only difference is the Map file changes between version 3 and 5.

I've been using MsAccess 97 but i have tried the new xp version, however i do not believe Map3 will support anything above 97 so i have remained there till i can export from map 5.

sincerely wishing to delete map3

Miss Walker,
I have fixed the problem partly.... all i simply did was rename my link file to a name without an underscore, map5 seems not to support it as map3 did.
I now can't seem to get all data to transfer. when i export 3100 files or polygons they all go but about 10% of the database information doesn't can you help thanks

I am sorry if I have offended anyone here, but it’s frustrating when your upgrade has downgraded some of the features I use the most. Sincerely, John

If I understand the issue correctly, you cannot
export more attribute data than the key field defined in the Link Template to
shape file format, right?

Could you give us some additional information like
what database format are you working with and w

size=2>hat OS and MDAC version do you have installed?

Be aware that the export engine has changed in the
meantime. That might be the reason that certain things don't work the same way
as before.

You can still access the old export engine by
typing MAPEXPORT4 in the command line.

Wendy,
I have noticed that the only difference between the maps is that in map3 I have named a schema "GIS" but in map5 it doesn't like that and cannot find the database at all. If I remove it in map5 it finds the database and you can continue to work with the data, you just can't export to shape files, unless of coarse you select key only.
