Forcing labels to show

I have been printing some maps for a project and I keep getting complaints that some of the parcel labels do not print or the street names don't print out in the right position.

My question(s): How can I force Map3D to display all the labels (or at least all of the ones in the viewport) at ANY zoom level and is there a way to move a feature label, along a street centerline for example, so that it will look better when plotted out.

I want these maps to look as good as possible because they will be shown in court and will help put a bank robber in prison and the others will help put a shooting suspect away.

Thanks for helping!

Nice to see that Map3D is being used in the criminal justice system. Now
like everything else you are taking to court before the judge and jury
provide some facts don't make us assume. 🙂
Are the labels FDO labels or annotation blocks or plain text? Are you
wanting them just for plotting to paper and look correct or do you still
need them dynamic linked to the features/objects?
If the document in question contains FDO features and labels then first is
to look at this:
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/item?siteID=123112&id=10408989&linkID=9240857
Second if you save the map to standard AutoCAD DWG format the FDO labels
turn into plain text objects, opening that dwg will allow you to move the
text, scale or whatever needs to be done to give it the proper look and
feel.
Third when plotting there are a few things you can try to get a better
looking plot, turn on or off map plot transparency (MAPPLOTTRANSPARENCY on
the command line) and tune the plotter properties under the raster settings.
It may take a few trial and errors to get it correct but once completed save
the changes to a new pc3 file for later use.

Also what version of map3d are you using? Some of these options may not
apply to old versions.

Thanks for the encouragement, the police officers seem to like the maps and aerials. We had a case where a couple of guys (drug dealers from about 100 miles away) broke into a local funeral home and shot the couple that owned it several times. They both survived but the husband lost an eye and both are still hurting today. Well, their attorney tried to say that these "gentlemen" were actually at an apartment complex two blocks away and could not have committed the crime. The PD had me print out some hi-res aerials depicting their most probable path of travel based on eyewitness testimony and they proved that the defendants would have had no problem shooting the couple and then running to the apartment. I was even allowed to go in and measure the interior of the funeral home and create floorplans showing how everything happened that night. I was told that my drawings and maps were a tremendous help. But now, onto business...

I am using Map3D 2010 and am linking to an Oracle 10.2g database. We are are in the process of implementing Topobase but that is a completely different post...

I looked at the article that you reference below but it didn't seem to do the trick. I may be wishing for a feature that Autodesk did not include. The labels seem to display dynamically and seem to show up or disappear based on how crowded the labels on either side are. I would just like this dynamic setting off and show all of the labels. I hope that this makes sense. It does to me but I've been told that my version of what makes sense can be different from the rest of the world's view.

Toggle between the Multiline and Advance Placement of the labels in the
labels style dialog and see if that makes a different. I would save the
Oracle layer to SDF then import that into Map3D with OD and create
annotblocks for the labels to give you control over the look and placement
if it's not to big of a layer file.

Murph:

I checked but those options are grayed-out and cannot be changes.

Are you labeling lines features with values from the data? or are they
annotation features?

I am labeling using attributes from the data. Is there a better way? I'll try any suggestion if it will help.

Unless something is totally messed up or locked somewhere you should not
have those two options grayed out? The Multiline and Advance Placement?
What version of Map3D are you using?

If the data is coming from an Oracle connection save the layer to a SDF file
then use that to import into a new dwg creating object data and use
annotation blocks to label.

I'm using Map3D 2010. I saved the layer (parcels, so they are polygons) to an SDF file, created a new annotation layer, and I get a style box. However, after reading the user guide, I think that the only thing that I am allowed to change is the font type. And the size... but ONLY if absolutely needed. I see that I can add new text to the annotation layer. Please tell me that I can copy this from the Oracle database as there are about 22,000 parcels that need to be annotated. I do see where tis will allow me to adjust the rotation and such so that is a plus.

Thanks,

Mike

PS - What is your opinion on Topobase?

With an annotation layer you need to create each record manually (that I'm
aware of). Use the Polygon layer, in the style editor click in the feature
label column and use the Style Label dialog to create the labels.

Topobase is great if you need an Enterprise GIS System and have a need to
track work orders, non-map users that need to get to data, need to display
maps out to a lot more users/employees. It takes a lot to set it up but once
it is in place there's little that anyone needs to do to it.

Only lines take advantage of Advanced Label placement, so if you are using points or polygons it will be grayed out.

I realize im a little late to chime in, but have you tried changing the size context of your labels from device space to map space?

Hey, it's never too late! Changing the size has not been an issue. I just want to be able to move/rotate the label inside of a polygon and most importantly, I want ALL of my labels to show up. Right now, if I zoom in so that only 4 or so parcels are showing, all of the labels show up. But when I zoom out a little bit to get a few more parcels in the view, 2 or 3 of the labels disappear. I just want this "dynamic display" of the labels turned to off so that all of the labels will show up.

If you have any ideas, I definately want to hear them.

Thanks,

Mike

That is what changing it to map space does. It makes the Labels a fixed size, but it does not help with moving or rotating them individually.

Open a new dwg, use map import to import the SDF file you saved from the
Oracle connection, under the data column in the import dialog select create
object data table. This will give you AutoCAD polygons with data (object
data) attached to it. Then use the map's mapanntemplate command to create an
annotation template. Once you created that temple use the _mapanninsert to
insert the blocks, these are just like standard AutoCAD blocks on steroids.
You can move rotate all you want. Once you have them placed where you need
them you can export them as points to a sdf file (take the values and
rotation property as data, then in your project connect to that sdf exported
file use a null symbol as the point marker but create a label from the data
and use the rotation value as the rotation angel for the labels.
If you need help creating the annotation blocks holler.
