Is there a duplicate field name in the DBF? If there is you will probably have to rename one. Unless one of the legends post a better answer.

Yep, there is a duplicate field name in the DBF. But, how do I rename it, if I can not open it? BTW, thanks for taking the time to read and reply to my post.

One of the legends has been on the road visiting customers. ; )
The safe way to rename it is use the map import and create object data then
rename one of the fields on the import, then export the objects back to shp
format if you need it as shp.
A not so safe way would be to open the dbf in a database application or
Excel then rename and save. I recommend creating a back up if doing that
first.

Well it will not let me use map import. So I opened it will excel and I can change the field name or field names, cause there are two that need to be renamed. But how do I save back to the format that I need?
Message 9 of 14

You want to make sure and save it to DBF 3 format. The newer formats never really got much play. One of the challenges is that Micro$oft isn't supporting DBFs much anymore. I can see it's going to become more of a challenge.

Another, somewhat safer alternative to Excel is one of the little DBF editors that still exist - like DBFView.

BTW - It was Murph doing the traveling. I was just around town doing the customer demos/workshops. Murph - sounds like you have to work sometimes, too. Edited by: rick-chappell on Feb 12, 2010 8:52 AM

Yea I have to work now and then, NOW if I could get the sales side to make
the appointments in the areas that I'm in at the same time frame instead of
driving back again a week later it would be nice not mention a little
cheaper on the expenses.

I'm lucky that way - I'm new on this side of the cash register, and our sales folks are incredible about eeking every bit out of a trip.

I can't wait to get off my lazy a@# and come see you guys one of these days. I'm sure it would be a lot of fun to get to know you two. Anyways, I cheated and fix the problem using.... I hope you guys don't hate me for this.... using ArcInfo to edit the tables as I wanted and saved it back out. Sure would be nice if AutoCAD Map 3D 2011 had this power.
Message 13 of 14

In production you gotta do what you gotta do. Until I came to this side, I had Arc on my desktop (or through a remote desktop on Unix) for the last 20 years. I always used AutoCAD to create data, and Arc for the analysis. I found as FDO really started to get better, I used Arc less and less for those tasks.

Hello

For me there is no duplicate field, but I have two that start with the same beginning (REF_FONCIER) and (REF_FONCI) that pose me problems

thanks
