External linking with xdata

I have a drawing in which another application created extended entity data
for some of the objects. I also have an external database with a key field
related to the xdata . Is it possible to automate the attachment of the
external data to xdata for each object much like "Generate Data Links"
command "_ADEGENLINK" does for text and blocks?

Oh by the way, the entity handle is also listed in the external database and
could be the key field.

(map_createlink ename lpn keyvalue)
ename is the entity
lpn is the Link template
keyvalue is the value obtained either from the xdata or the handle,
whichever you prefer but it must be passed as a list

It should be noted that this is an undocumented command that Autodesk will
not comment on
other that saying it could go away in future releases, but I have been using
it since Map 3.
