I have read and read about this topic and i am more confused then ever. I have an Esri contour shape file i want to bring in with elevations. can some one please give me step by step instructions. don't assume i know what i am doing because it is obvious that i don't. this has been going on too long and i am reaching my giving up point. i am using 2009.

Depends on what you want to do with it afterwards.

Not to highjack the thread, but how would you go the other way then? If
I already have 3D polylines in Map, is there a way export them to a
shape file with Z values directly out of Map?

After importing with the object data turned on, grab the free
http://www.dotsoft.com/public/elevbymapod.vlx, it defines
a command that lets you select the objects in the *current* drawing,
choose a OD field and it sets the object elevation to the field value.

Yes there is a way. In the export dialog on the Option tab, click on the
Drivers Options and select 3D shape files. It will include the Z elevation
in the shape file.

Terry,
Quit popping my bubble. 🙂
I knew you had some thing for it but thought it was part of the map package
you have and not a freebie.

Well, I just never stop learning - just use the button I've never before
pressed. Thanks Murph.

Follow-up question though, I notice the Drivers button is greyed out
when exporting to SDF. I'm not too familiar with the nuts and bolts,
but does SDF not support 3D data?

The (nearly free) MapWorks Import lets you simply select the Z value
field as part of the import specs, not even a secondary process necessary.

I released the freebie because I got tired of seeing the hoops that Map
puts users through, attaching it and setting up a query to patch what
should have been done during import.

The 3D for SDF is called DWG format.

I work in both Land Desktop and Civil 3D, each with MAP. I know how to bring the SHP file in and have the elevations added to the contours but I'd like to refine the query somewhat. I've got these huge SHP files with two-foot contours but all I really want is contours at every 10-foot interval. How do I write a query for this?

I am currently using 2008 and having a problem with this also. I previously (months ago) imported the same file I am currently trying to import and had no problems. The problem is the attributes are not listing an elevation after clicking on create object data. Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful.

What is showing as attributes? Is the FID number
the only one that is listed?

like so

Where WASH is the OD table in my example and Elev1 is the elevation value.

The only problem with that approach is that my terrain extends from 0 to 1600 feet in elevation, so that I would need to make 160 entries in the compond query. I was trying to figure out a way to make the elevation value a mathematical expression but I hit a dead end.

Its been a while since I messed with Map queries but I believe they are
lisp code. Perhaps you could establish an expression to divide by the
contour interval and check for a remainder?

If you were to consider third party software, our MapWorks product has a
Delete Intermediate tool that would work after the fact. We could also
add an interval option to our Shape import tool.

Is it possible to run a query and have the contours labeled at the same time after importing the shape file?
