ESRI->Autodesk Migration

Hi!

We have ESRI based database and we have started to migrate all data to
autodesk.
So I have few questions...

1. What is the best format to convert SHP layers?
SHP->DWG?
SHP->SDF?
SHP-> something else???
Which is the best way??

2. Is DWG only project file or each layer could be stored in one DWG file?

3. Can DWG project contain relative links to data sources souch as SHP
etc....? I'm asking becouse I don't know hot to share my projects in DWG
files....

4. Should we use SDF? Is SDF only layer file or SDF can contain project?

Thank you

What you use for a file format depends on what you plan to do with the data.
Could you provide a brief summary of
what your projects involve. i.e are you drawing maps, querying information
and doing thematic mapping, will the data need
to be used in ESRI products again?, In house only or sharing with clients?

Hi!

I'm planing to make maps for printing, and I'm planing to make web-GIS based maps, so yes, we will make some themed maps.

We will not use that data in ESRI software again. We will share our data with others. But we will share only layer informations, not complete projects.

Is SDF autodesk's pandan to SHP? Which is best format for SHP conversion?

And what about symbols? Should we create blocks? Sholud we store styling data in .layer files?

We have spend long time on ESRI, now we have to move to Autodesk (new company's policy) and I'm not quite sure that I understand analogy between those two platforms.... I know that I can use SHP with autodesk, but we would like complete migration so....

1. SDF
2. SDF can be more than one feature type so yes it could be a whole project,
but I recommend to keeping them to certain like features, example. roads
(lines type) and mile markers (point type) as one SDF then water lines and
water meters and values.
3. Drawings containing SDF and drawing objects (standard autocad lines can
be shared a number of different ways, depending on who the are shared with
and what format you need to share.

If you have not looked yet take a look at a nice tool called FDO2FDO by
sl-king (www.sl-king.com) it makes converting the shp to sdf easy.

I agree with Murph. SDF is the way to go especially if you want to publish
the data to the internet. It also stores attribute data more efficiently
than a DWG.

I am now dealing with this class description error with 2011.  What a pain.  I believe it can be both a registry and drawing issue.

I do know when I went to intsall civil3d 2012 when it came out, It messed up civil3d 2011.  The .net libaries were messed up when it came to COM.  I just stopped programning with COM.  My Civil3d 2011 continued to work fine.  Then back in June this year (2013) I started getting this class description error.  Never have seen it before.  It's now permeating the agency I'm doing some work for.  Funny thing is everything works fine except for this stupid dialog box.  Audits, recover do nothing.

I've spent too much of my own time trying to get this fixed.  I now consider this an Autodesk problem.  The agency will have to talk to Autodesk to get it fixed as far as I'm concerned.

It appears Autodesk acknowledges nothing about this as far as I can tell.  At least they could come up with a fix or allow us to turn of that dialog box off.

Hi,

>> I am now dealing with this class description error with 2011

May I ask what you are speaking about? In the thread here I see nothing about any class description error, nothing about COM libraries, nothing about programming, ...?

I replied to a class description error post, not ESRI, not sure why
it went to you but the Autodesk website sucks.
