.dwg files with bound xrefs not opening in Illustrator

Hi all,

I have been having drama's opening a dwg file, that I have bound (binded) xrefs to, in Illustrator. When I attempt to open the file I get an error: "Filter cannot complete because of an unknown error".

Can anyone offer any advice? The xrefs were all 'bound' successfully too.
