Using Xrefs

If, when using Xrefs, one wished to save a copy of the original detail produced, for record purposes, whilst still using the new detail how would this be done? As soon as the Xref file is changed then all clones from this file are changed and therefore, during a design period where there are many evolutions of a detail, any record of previously issued details would be lost.

Use AutoDesk Vault or save all versions as DWF (DWG)

Thanks Arnout.
Occassionally I am asked to revert to the old detail because during development, the new detail is impractical. Do you know of a way to save these drawings?

The only way is to save extra copies in DWG or publish each version to DWF.
Using Vault makes a new copie of each version.

You have to save ALL your DWG files, not just the one you are in.

Thanks for your help Dean but if I save a drawings - say revision A - that is linked to an Xref, then alter the Xref and update the drawing to a B revision, is it not the case that the A rev will be changed also?

Would it help if I bound the Xref to the A rev drawing?

Repath your archive copies
or
Bind and SAVE your archive copy.

What you seek requires work on your end unfortunately, there is no quick fix
unless you want to buy a server program like VAULT (not cheap) as noted
above.

Dean is right.
It is work to keep multiple versions of your drawings.
Binding is one option but to save your information, but what happens if you want to go back to 2 or 3 versions before?
You can only copy details back to your then current version of your x-ref.

The best way is to prevent changing back to previous states and make well thought decissions.
But that is easier said then done.

If you publish to DWF you can attach your DWF version under your current version and redraw your details.
A good back-up system can help too.

Every time you issue a drawing so the changes in
all the xrefs are fixed at that point to an eTransmit to package it all up and
keep archived copies
