UCS vs Direction Control orientation

I use ACAD LT 2006 on Win X Pro.

I use a surveying instrument as well for locating points on a site.

ACAD LT and the surveying instrument work together very well for me. Sort of
like, how did I do this before?

Anyway, the compass orientation in ACAD LT is important for me, more so than
if I was just doing drawings. It jsut doesn't seem to work correctly.

I also work on drawings with many odd angles, and it helps me to use UCS to
re-orient the model view for drawing as well orienting paperspace viewports
for printing.

Here are the tools that seem to affect how the drawing interprets direction.

I have found the Direction Control under Format>Units. This seems to just
not do much of anything.

UCS can rotate the view of the drawing when set to "Update View to Plan When
UCS is Changed". It also affects the direction control.

Then there is dynamic input which seems to give you the choice of absolute
angles & direction or relative, but this also doesn't seem to really work.

What I run into is that a drawing in "World" UCS starts out as having east
(right on the drawing) be 0 degrees. Why east (right) was chosen for zero I
have no idea.

Supposedly if you choose north as the base angle in Direction Control then
north (up) becomes zero degrees for your direction. I wish it were so.

Now after setting north as base, if I have dynamic on, and click the line
tool, click on a starting point, and enter 100'; tab; 0; I still get a line
drawn 100' to the east.

If I start my line, enter 100'; tab; 270; the line wants to go south (down).
But then the dynamic window changes itself to read 90 degrees. If I re-enter
270, it then moves the line to north (up).

It appears to me that somethin' just ain't workin' right here.

Now if I set UCS so that it does not "update view to plan" and rotate the
UCS settings 90 degrees to the left, then the line will draw north when told
to. But at this point I can't use UCS to rotate the model view so I can draw
odd angle areas of the house easier.

Am I missing something here?

Thanks,

Greg Chapp

In messing with this more, it looks like I misunderstood the difference
between absolute and relative coordinates.

When set to relative coordinates, it works as I want it to, if I use the "<"
while entering the polar coordinates.
