Trim issue

I have come across an odd issue today with the trim command in one of my drawings Using LT 2014. I use the trim command by typing trim in the command prompt and pressing enter twice - I know there are different and possibly easier ways to use the command but this is what I am happy with and have done so for the last 15 years! This usually allows me to trim any line that I click back to the nearest line intersection. However working on a drawing today the trimming back would miss the nearest intersection point with another line (i.e. Trimming would go beyond first intersection point) nd/or leave small sections of the trimmed line. What I find odd that this issue only affects one of my drawings - other drawings don't have the problem.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Daryl

In the drawing your working, are there perhaps any proxy/AEC objects?

Any third party software been involved in the drawing?

From own experience this sometimes is the case for me when trim and other similar commands behave strangely.

If it really causes a problem for you, you can try AECTOACAD if the drawing contains AEC or Proxy objects, you can also try Wblocking.

Also, check so there aren't any hidden objects that Autocad snaps/trims to.

Find out more about what's going on: start TRIM command, hit <enter> only once, then select that mystery cutting edge and try to finish trimming those objects. Does the command fuction properly (or like it did previously)?

AcadAdamLT - unsure if there are any proxy/Aec objects? There could be as I have had proxy warnings in the past on cad. No third party software involved.

I assume that AECTOACAD and Wblocking are commands in full version of cad and not LT? - These are 'Unknown' commands in LT.

Pendean - I have tried your suggestion but still have the same issue. The trim command works fine for 80% of the time within the drawing and the issue comes up intermittently.

Thanks,

Daryl

Same issue? You selected the cutting line manually and the line got trimmed back to anotgher object?
Do you know how to rotate the UCS? Place a colored marker near the object (or change it's color to something very obvious and strange in your file so that it stands out), then in LT2014 (if you use the Ribbon) click on the VIEW tab, then on the VIEWS panel you see a bunch of boxes and a shaded plane on each. Scroll down and click on FRONT and see if you can spot your mystery object, then perhaps SW ISOMETRIC too. Does it appear to be floating, or worse, a 3D object?

-EXPORTTOAUTOCAD command is the full name (there is a dash in the name, don't skip it) if AECTOACAD shortcut resulted in an unknown command: it's in LT and AutoCAD too.

yes - same issue. The line trims back approx. 100mm to thin air! i.e. not to an object that I can see. tried your suggestion in views panel but could not see anything that it could be trimming back to.

-EXPORTTOAUTOCAD and AECTOACAD coming up as unkown command on my LT 2014 - see attached photo.

Could the drawing have been done in 3D originally, it sounds like your objects are at different elevations and your ucs is not level with the drawing, try typing 'UCS' followed by 'VIEW' and then try the trim command again, can you post the drawing so someone can check it.

Your LT2014 installation is not correct: those are core AutoCAD commands that have been around for a while.

Post a DWG with this object and issue still in place: we don't need your entire file, a WBLOCK will work, but you need to confirm the problem is still there and provide instructions in it on how to replicate it.

And you probably ought to plan on repairing/reinstalling LT2014 at some point then fully updating/patching it: who knows what else is missing (assuming you did not Migrate from an ancient version to LT2014 at some point).

Agree with steven-g......sounds like the trim line Z co-ordinate might not be on 0,00. Maybe a case for the FLATTEN command!

list the lines involved and check to see if their z value is 0.0

play with the command edgemode.  It has settings that could cause some of the effects you're describing.  At least in earlier versions.  See help for the setting choices and what each does.

That's all I got.  Good luck.

Hi Daryl,

As the other posters have mentioned, this sounds like an issue with UCS, elevations, EDGEMODE, or maybe the Project option of TRIM. As Dean suggested posting all or part of the drawing would be the best way for the rest of us to troubleshoot this. If you could indicate which line in the drawing you can reproduce this with (maybe change the color and width and tell us what to look for), that would also be helpful.

Thanks Smiley Happy

Thanks to all that have replied. I have attached the offending file. Try and trim the red line back to green line.....   so frustrating!

It works without problems for me ? Other than zoom extents sending you way off into space I can't spot any problems.

Looking a bit closer, I used the trim command without selecting objects (just double enter to select all) and it did provide some odd results. I think it has something to do with the large numbers. Moving the geometry closer to the Origin cleared up the issues. Unless you need the objects to be 16 billion kilometers from the origin, it is much easier on the system to have things closer to zero.

 Many thanks Steven-g

"Moving the geometry closer to the Origin cleared up the issues"

This also worked for me! Unsure why the geometry was so far away from 0,0 origin to start with (must have been some error by operator!).

Thank you,

Daryl
