Tracing a Scan in ACAD LT 2004

Hi There--
How do I put a scanned image in Model Space in ACAD LT 2004?
Is it possible?

I can't figure it out...
Any help would be most appreciated!
Thanks,
Kevin

1. Copy/Paste between two open programs (LT being the
recipient), a Windows feature since ... .
2. INSERTOBJ command: usage explained in Help.
3. Depending on format or the image, drag from Windows
Explorer and drop into an open LT window: a Windows feature
since ... .

Hi--
Thanks for your reply, but that doesn't work. The pasted or "INSERTOBJ" just shows up as a white box with the name of the file in it.

Does AutoCAD LT support this feature?

Are my settings wrong?

Thanks!

Well, the question is not really about getting the image into Autocad. The question is about tracing the image once it is in. Generally, I don't advise this since the accuracy is not so good and you could probably redraw the information quicker and more accurately. I don't know what your image is, or the application, but this is my general observation.

Now, there are things that are good to trace. For example, we sometimes trace contour lines from old surveys or civil plans. We can draw the boundaries and buildings very accurately and very fast, but contours are slow and difficult, so tracing is a great option.

At any rate, you will have to scale what you trace. This means you need at least one or two know lengths on your scan. Then you just stretch it and align it with that same item that you drew to exact dimensions in the drawing.

This whole process takes a bit of getting used to, but great when what you need to trace is abundant, but where accuracy is not the ultimate goal.

What format is the image? White box means it's a format
AutoCAD/LT does not support directly, so you will need to
use the LONG option for INSERTOBJ command or the other
option I mentioned.

I've tried using the insertobj option and the "cut and paste" options but the result is the same--white box. I've tried with bmp and jpeg files to no avail.

Any other suggestions on how to import images? Is there a RASTER command or some such? I'm beginning to think AutoCAD LT 2004 doesn't support it.

Well, here is a screen shot of LT2004 with a BMP and a JPG that I just dragged from Windows Explorer into LT, and seems to work just fine.
What exactly are you doing?

I made an image of the steps to add a simple jpeg to my AutoCad LT file. Drag and drop doesn't work...nor does the "insertobj" command, etc...What could I possibly be doing wrong? I thank you for your help!!
Most kind!

I'm running Acad LT 2004 on Windows XP.
Any thoughts?

You must have something on your system preventing this
function. Sorry, no idea, maybe it's your scanned image that
is the problem.

2. open this file in adobe illustrator
3.save as DWG.
4.voila, now you can open it in autocaLT!!

... then Explode all the Splines if your machine decides to
suddenly lock all or stop altogether... .

It's still only as good as what you start with though, no
magic fix there. For that you might find Raster2Vector
software at 1/4 the price of Illustrator do a better job.

there are no splines here. The scanned image that you export as DWG opens as a raster image. you can then trace over it and scale it.
you have to have illustrator though and as you suggest, a raster to vector software may be cheaper way to go!
