This hotfix cannot be applied?

I have been having the common problem of the error message "ARX ERROR: eDuplicateKey". I've located and downloaded the hotfix but when i try to install it says it cannot be applied.

I have 2005LT and 2002LT installed. The hotfix i tried to use was "Hotfix - Autodesk 2005 OE"

That will only work for LT2005: Windows must have that as the default LT
running on your system. Run it, then make sure dwg files default to it when
double-clicked in Windows Explorer, then try the hotfix.

There is no cure for 2002.

I understand using the free converter from Autodesk and saving down to R2000
or R14 is supposed to be more friendly for older versions of AutoCAD, but
I've not tested it.
I also understand round-tripping files to R12DXF fixes the problem too: also
not tested by me, so I can't confirm this.
