Shading background layers for plotting

I have a drawing of our manufacturing facility that has about 30 layers. I would like an easy way to plot most of the visible layers in such a way that they are a very dim gray color so the layers i'm trying to emphasize stands out. There must be a very easy way to do this, but I just don't know the terminology. Thanks

If you use a colour dependant plot style (.ctb) you can assign a colour to plot with a certain percentage "screening" which you control from the plot style editor.
