Seting Up a Scale

I was just wondering how to set up a scale when I first set up a drawing. For example: I want to a box that is 8 feet wide in real life but I want to scale it down in a drawing to be the size of 8" (1" to 1'). Once I'm able to do this how can I make a dimension that automatically reads 8 feet when I insert it? Any help on this matter would be appreciated.

Thanks

Just wondering, why would you not want to draw everything at full scale, then set up your annotation to display accordingly, i,e. 1/4"=1'-0" ? That way you aren't having to do a bunch of converting of sizes and lengths.

You always draw at 1:1 in AutoCAD, never at a
scale.

You only start to think about scale when it's time
to set up a sheet/layout and plot.

Just get a book or do some of the intro things that Autocad has. This is one
of the basic things you learn when you start out learing Autocad.

Ok so draw the object accordingly and then change the annotation scale at the end? How do I do this?

So If I draw an 8" long line and then want to print it out so the scale is 1" to 1' - how would I do this?

Line command
8" long

PLOT command, Window selection, plot scale set to 1"=1'. Done.

or
Start a Layout, MVIEW command, draw a viewport, double-click inside the
viewport, zoom to your 8" line. Then use the viewport scale (VPScale line
just below your display screen in AutoCAD) and select the scale. Done.

If none of the above make sense, start HELP and start reading: HELP>Contents
Tab>User's Guide>Plot and Publish Drawings>Plot Drawings chapters is a good
place to start.

Actually, I started out with a tutorials that came with the program long
ago, ACAD LT 95 I think it was. Don't recall that I ever had a book. These
were all free, and for me really got me going being able to use it.

So I would suggest trying the beginning tutorials that come with it, and
anything else you can find on the Autodesk website.

If those no longer exist, or you still want more, then spend some money on a
book.
