Raster to Vector conversion

I just started using a trial version of Autodesk raster and am having trouble with getting it to recognize any of my imported (new) raster drawings. I've imported jpeg and dxf and neither are something I am able to use? I know I must be doing something wrong. Could someone tell me how to bring in a drawing properly so I can use this? All drawings are scanned and are mostly just text from Word or Excel

Why not just simply copy/paste from Word/Excel into LT? Or
print those to PDF, then copy/paste from PDF into LT?

I have copied and pasted these formats and it's the problem with the "black" square on my drawing. What am i doing wrong. Never spent any time with this type of work.Always drew things from scratch b/c they were all new.
