Missing Shape Files (Aeccland.shx)

Hi there,

We're using AutoCAD LT 2009, so we of course do not have Aeccland.shx. I am aware that I do not have it. I don't particularly care that I don't have it.

AutoCAD, on the other hand, is very concerned. So concerned, in fact, that it will ask me for this file every time I open projects that involve baseplans shapes from this file. I would like to allay AutoCAD's concerns, and inform it that aeccland.shx is not neccesary, and it can get along quite happily without aeccland.shx, and any other shape file. I would like to do this very much, as I am currently working on a project with 60 or more separate files I must pull information from to compile baseplans I can use.

Does anyone know how to tell AutoCAD not to ask for missing shape files any more?

Ask the file creators to send you this file, along
with their DWG files, and be done with it.

Otherwise there is no fix: to stop the prompt you
need to replace it, to replace it you need to tick off the file
creators.

Talk/Communicate with your files creators, no one
else, to resolve the problem.

There is another, but still extremely painful tiresome annoying, way to avoid this.

Go through the file and remove any reference to the shx file. This will most likely be embedded in blocks, text, points or lines so the best approach is to explode and purge until you have the most basic elements. Then quick select types of objects and change them to known clean styles. Eventually you'll get a clean file, it's about then you get an updated one.

I consider it's actually extremely bad design that you can't get rid of the shx dialog but it appears Autodesk don't.

bad software design? No, the file content is controlled by the file creator,

I'm afraid I agree with Robin: No option to disable the dialogue seems like an oversight, or a poor decision. Having the shape files does nothing for me other than disable the dialogue, and it would be far easier to be able to tick off "Remember this action" and ignore missing shape files. Most other similar dialogues already do this, don't they (Proxy Objects, Annotation scales, and Layer Filters are the ones I can think of)? I have hardcopies, DXFs, and PDFs to show me the correct looking fonts and notes.

Anyways, your solution and Robin's are the only two I knew of, and it looks like they are the only options. ESC key it is, I'm not going to make other consultants fetch useless files for me.

You might feel different if you opened a drawing that required a shape
file, did not get prompted, and then plotted it out, and then have your
client and/or regulatory agency return your drawings because your
linetypes are messed up. The solution is to obtain the shape file or get
rid of the dependency.

If there was a design error, maybe it was the decision to not embed
shapes in the drawing - but there are two sides to this also.

I would be OK with dismissing the dialog, IF there was a comprehensive
"WARNING" area where I could go and review missing shapes, xrefs, fonts,
and other references - but I would want the option to force this upon
users also.

Throwing a prompt at the command line is not enough. I can recall many
times where users complained about that "AutoCAD is using the wrong
font" - when they didn't read the command line to notice that font
substitution had taken place.

clean the drawing with purge and make a block of the drawing.

open the block and save the drawing in the original name.

this will do the trick

you will clear all the information in the drawing you do not need

thankyouthankyouthankyou. I had a .shx file stuck in my custom template, it was driving me crazy! saved the template as a block and it's gone. resaved as .dwt. all is well.

Make sure that the path where this shape file (shx) is properly set in you AutoCAD support file search path in your tools option. To make sure that all your AutoCAD settings are saved, create a profile and save it at a location where you can retrieve it when working on a different workstation or to reload it in case you have to reinstall AutoCAD. Loading your profile loads every settings you made and saves the toolbars and buttons to what ever position you had it.
