LT Upgrade?

Good afternoon,
newbie here...I am looking to buy AutoCAD LT but had a question. If I buy the LT version, can I later upgrade to the full version for less $ or do I have to buy the full version at full price? Also, how can someone purchase an earlier version of CAD if you don't want the most recent and would it be discounted?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

You should call a local dealer with these questions.

There have been promotional upgrades in the past, but they expired in
January. When I asked about it a few years ago, the discount to upgrade
versus buying outright and keeping the copy of LT was about $150. We kept
the copy of LT for the secretary to make minor text edits and plotting.

As for the old versions, I think they are still full price even if you find
a copy of 2007 or older. Again, call a dealer for the full story.

I called my reseller a couple of months ago and they told me I would get a
$50.00 discount if and when I upgraded to the full version. Not hardly
worth it if you ask me. I will end up keeping my copy of LT when I buy the
full version.

You can still pick up LT2007 on Amazon and such places, although I don't
know why you would want to as most places I have seen that have both usually
have LT2008 for less!

Hope it helps!

Thanks to both of you for the responses.

Robo,
is it worth buying LT or is it best to go ahead and get the full version. Is there that big of a difference between the two besides the 3D functionality of the full version?

Thanks again

Full AutoCAD has a lot ore functionality and conveniences
than just 3D over LT, download a trial version of both and
explore side-by-side to decide. LT is good-enough for many.

Having not used LT in several years, I was a little dissapointed to learn
that there are several features not supported that I use frequently in the
full version. Such as non-rectangualr viewports, image references and the
Express tools!

I plan on upgrading to the full version at a later date, but for now, LT's
sticker price was much easier to swallow!

Some of what you want is available in other ways. Non-rectangular viewports
can be inserted using full AutoCAD and then the file used in LT. Images can
be inserted into LT using a Copy - Paste from a photo editing program or MS
Word. Some of the functions from Express Tools are now in the core package
as a Layers II toolbar. Others can be imitated using macros. Post back or
just search here for functions that you miss from full AutoCAD's express
tools.

I was in a bind and needed CAD to complete a project for a client so I bought LT 2007. I just don't have the funds to pay over $3,000 for the full version (I barely have the $ for the $900+ that the LT costs). Hopefully I can upgrade to the full version in the future should my freelance business grow larger.

Thanks to everyone's responses and comments!

To answer your questions about the differences, search here for a post by
Dean. He has previously posted a long detailed list of the differences. I
don't know if has been updated for 2008.

In a nutshell, the differences are in two areas, 3D and customization via
lisp, vba, arx, etc. You can still customize LT, but it is limited.

I started my business and went 10 years on LT before switching to AutoCAD
Civil 3D. It just depends on the type of business. There are also add-ons
specifically for LT that may address your needs. As for the cost, the
add-ons are reasonable, but the one I used to use had to be purchased at
full cost every time I upgraded my LT. On the other hand, the subscription
for Civil 3D is more than the original purchase price for LT!

Here is one...

I just noticed last night that XOPEN is not in LT... WHY? Seems strange
that they leave some of these "no brainer" commands out of the app. Granted
it's not a deal breaker, but it sure is a nice command to have!

Open HELP in LT, look and see what's missing, no need to repost every
one you find, or not find LOL, it's been hashed and rehashed every
time a non-LT user buys this cheap version of autocad.

Customer Involvement Program, like you were told, is
voluntary and you turn it off the first time 2008 starts
when it pops-up until you turn it back on. Hardly the big
scary variable you made it sound like a few weeks back on
UPeZine 🙂

Nice try.

CIPMODE/CustomerInvolvementProgram at the command prompt:
0 - no participation.
1 - participating in customer program by allowing the CAD
vendor to monitor command usage etc via the net.

Thanks for that!

Some how I new you would replay this for me but how could you not!
It was a Zen riddle.

O.K you almost passed! How about the LT system variable PSVPSCALE!

Just as I suspect!

You do not have LT 2008 only ADT 2008 and you post on these issues as if you
know the difference!

>>LT2008>Help, look up what you need.
So what does your recommendation say?

LOL, I honestly don't care what you personally think or
believe these days, take some time off and enjoy a
test-match or 20 to unwind.
