LT 2013 for mac raster/ pdf underlay

When I insert a raster or pdf underlay the drawing becomes painfully slow with so much lag on commands it is almost impossible to draw.

 

Does anyone have any ideas? any help appreciated.

 

My 8yr windows system running an ancient version of AutoCAD does not have this problem at all!

 

My mac is a brand new top spec machine I dont think it's a hardware problem.

 

I almost wish I had paid a bit extra and bought vectorworks LT for mac is a bit of a turkey.
