Layer states

I am frustrated because it appears that there is an option missing from the layer states dialog box. I would like to be able to control whether layers are frozen or thawed in the current viewport with layer states. Is there a way to do this?

If you scroll over to the right of the window you will find a column that represents "Current Viewport" where you can freez and thaw layers.

I've found that if you want to save your Frozen/Thawed layer states, you should Freeze/Thaw any layers you want, and then select the layers you wish to save and right click on one and goto 'Save Layer States'. In the dialog box call the states whatever...say 'Test', then select Frozen/Thawed, and save.

Then when you restore 'Test', you'll find that your Frozen/Thaw layers are as you want them.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, i believe that you are referring to the regular (global) freeze/thaw option, and I would like to be able to freeze/thaw layers in my CURRENT viewport. I see that Layer States offers the ability to freeze/thaw layers in a NEW viewport, but not in a CURRENT viewport. I would like to be able to do this. Oh, well. Maybe in the next version...

Thank you for replying. I think you are referring to the "Layers" dialog box rather than the "Layer States" dialog box.

I use a toolbar macro for it instead of layer
states.  You have to know what you want, but I find it is helpful when
setting up new viewports.

dzuber ,

why do you want to save the layer states within a viewport? Since a
viewport (the rectangle) is nothing more as layer states plus a
rectangle plus a view direction, why don't you just copy the viewport
to another layout so you have both 'states' immediately available by
clicking on the tabs?

Copying the viewport is a great suggestion, but does not work when you have
new layers after the viewport was created, or change one or more of the
layers after creating the viewport. I hope that Autodesk will consider
putting the current viewport freeze and thaw in the layer states. Until
then, I will continue to use the macro as I suggested. It can be rather
long when having to name 50 or 100 layers, but it is still faster and more
precise when updating numerous layouts. Our layer naming conventions allow
us to use wild cards when specifying layers, which really speeds up the
macro writing.

When I need to create new layers after viewports have been created,
I use this approach; Create a number of new layers, all starting with
temp1, temp2, etc. Then use the vplayer command as follows;

=====
Command: VPLAYER Enter an option
[?/Freeze/Thaw/Reset/Newfrz/Vpvisdflt]: F

Enter layer name(s) to freeze or
