Importing from VectorWorks (MAC)

Have a design company working for us using Vectorworks 8.5 on a MAC. We have asked them to export files to us in either DWG or DXF. When we open these, layer colors have changed and titling is missing - does anyone know either:

- how we can import VectorWorks (MAC) files to LT 2002
- do a global update of layer colors without having to redraw designs

Any assistance offered appreciated.

Thanks

That is based solely on the abilities of their program to be able to export
to DWG or DXF.

If they are your layers, and your color choices, a simple script file or
toolbar button macro using the -LAYER command (note the dash) can cycle
through the layers and assign correct colors for it. -RENAME command (note
the dash) can be used in the same way if you need to fix typical layer names
too.

HELP can explain both the above commands, plus how to create toolbar button
macros and/or script files.

I think that Dean hit the nail on the head. Most of the translation needs
to be done from their end. Other CAD programs (MicroStation and VectorWorks
most notably) translate the layer colors into entity colors when saved as
DXF or DWG. The Default linetype is also translated as "continuous" as
opposed to "bylayer". That means that all the information listed above is
not of a "bylayer" assignment, and needs to be changed as Dean noted. As
far as titling missing, perhaps they are using a font that does not
translate well using VW r8.5's DWG/DXF translation engine. (Perhaps that
font is not on your system and/or and needs to be redefined on your end.)
I know from experience that VW r10's DWG/DXF translation engine is better
than VW r8.5's. Happy translating.
