Hyperlinks for ACAD

I don't use hyperlinks in ACAD for my application so I am illiterate on the subject, but a friend of mine in Salt Lake wants to.

His setup is full ACAD 2012

No idea of system specs

Here is his question:

================
I am trying to create a hyperlink in AutoCad.  It is basically attaching information on existing blocks.  ie. a Phoenix Contact Power Supply with attached .pdf file to it's datasheets that I have created.

The problem - I can do this on my computer but I get an error message - bad file extension - when trying to receive the file.  I can go directly and open the .pdf file where I saved it but trying to do it through the AutoCad hyperlink I get the error.

I wanted to factor out some issues so I tried to do the same thing on Vernon's [the boss] computer and it worked with no issues.

So, the problem is with my office computer here at work.

Question - what could be causing the error message of "bad file extension"?  What should I check?

==============

I have searched HELP but there is only the description that I found.

Found an AUGI link that suggests that the file extension is not registered

A little help here, plz

TIA

DJ

Worked perfectly well here in LT 2014 using a Field in an Attribute.

Both a PDF in My Docs and a link to the Manufacturer's website.

And I think I just read the one AUGI Google hit that you read as well.

File association was the only item mentioned but that is an odd culprit if the file works as intended otherwise

2014 Help says PICKFIRST must be set to ! to open files associated with Hyperlinks

Could that be it?

Can they open the PDF on their PC outside of AutoCAD? What application opens it?
Can they successfully hyperlink to the same PDF in other programs on the problem PC?
Do they have file extensions on in Windows explorer?
Hyperlinks in not an AutoCAD function, it relies on Windows always.
