Fatal Error: Unhandled Access Violation Reading

I have had the following Fatal Error: Unhandled Access Violation Reading
0x4dcb976 Exception At 36020db4h several times today... It occurs whenever
the following cicumnstances happen simultaneously:

I drag a block from the Design Center to the drawing...

An Automatic Save begins...

I am running Windows ME on a P3- 866 with 256M RAM... Any assitance would be
appreciated

Also why doesn't Autodesk have any patches, or if they do where are they...
they only have a patch for upgraders, that I can find.

If any responses can be copied to jdexter@paxtontech.com, that would be
great, thanks.

Turn AUTOSAVE off, set ISAVEPERCENT to 0 (zero), QSAVE, then drag the file
in from ADCENTER, and see if the problem is repeated.

Okay, but this is not a fix... AutoSave is a crucial aspect of working with
this "practically" beta product... is there a patch, or will autodesk issue
a patch... this needs to be addressed, is there someone I can notify at
autodesk?

Well, the same error occurred again... this time Auto Save was turned off as
you reccomended, Dean... any other thoughts... this error would be at least
tolerable if it didn't freeze up AutoCAD and not allow me to recover the
work since my last quick save...

Well, there are quite a few things you could try, to at least eliminate the
PC and Windows ME as the problem first:

-Uninstall your anti-virus software;
-Remove all MS Office apps from your START>PROGRAMS>STARTUP folder;
-Remove your network card, and Uninstall the drivers;
-Update your video card drivers;
-If you have a ZIP drive, updated drivers from IOMEGA's website is
recommended at this point in 2002;
-In Windows>Display, turn down screen resolution to 800x600, 256 colors, and
turn off completely video card hardware acceleration;
-Run AUDIT (answer yes to fix errors), or RECOVER on both the file you are
having problems (and all Xrefs, individually, attached to it) with and the
block you are dragging in with ADCENTER;
-Make sure both the file and the block you are dragging in are the same
version of AutoCAD as what you are using;
-Restart your PC after each of the above happens and make sure settings
stick;
-Do a repair install of 2002;
-Restart your PC again.
-Now try the drag and drop, of course with both files on your local HD.
-If all works, start putting back items above, one at a time, restarting
your PC and testing 2002 after everyone, until the culprit is identified.
-Your problem may well be WindowsME if it was an upgrade install (some here
would even say WindowsME is the problem).

If you are still having problems, post both the master file and the block or
blocks to Customer Files discussion area for others here to try in 2002: at
least someone can determine if it is the files, or your system that is the
problem.

As for my AUTOSAVE comment, relying on it is never a good idea, as it really
does not work as good as, or as reliably as a manual QSAVE: learn to QSAVE
more often, even repeatedly. Make it a quick key command or something more
convenient, and make sure a BAK file is always created. Worried that the BAK
file might be too old? Then double QSAVE.

Hey Dean doesn't this seem like way to much of a hasle just to run an
autocad program. The last suggestion I got from Autodesk was to remove all
programs except windows and then load acad only. This doesn't seem at all
reasonable. I don't know of anyone who has only two programs on a computer.

I have never had any install problems with AutoCAD or LT on work PCs, but
then I am very careful about what applications I manage and install (MS,
Adobe, Macromedia, Norton), I generally stay away from shareware and
freeware and game applications, or screensavers, I do not buy consumer PCs,
and I never upgrade an OS on older hardware (just buy all new as we
upgrade), I dumped Win95 as soon as it was financially possible, I do not
run any media player software while I work (or have them active and resident
in my task bar), keep my anti-virus software version updated (not just virus
definitions updates) and set at normal settings, and so on.

Now, my home gaming PC, that is a different story 😉

So, when someone comes along having this much trouble, I have to agree with
Autodesk tech.support guys: reformat your HD, install your original OS and
all updated drivers and patches for the floppy and CDrom only, then
AutoCAD/LT and any patches, and run it. if it works, and almost no reason
why it should not if your PC is up to spec, then whatever you add next could
well be the culprit.

But then, I have noticed all 2002s do seem a little shaky and flaky compared
to 2000is: pulled out of the oven before it was done I suspect 😞

Hey there. I have the same problem, around 2 to 5 times a day!!!

I came up with the best solution. Its called T-ruler and a piece of
paper!!!!

Never in my years of using Autocad I had to deal with so many crashes and so
many workaround that make my computer completly unusable for anything else.
(hey whats the point of owning a computer if you cant play UT? )

Please Autocad, address this dreaded problem and give us something that
actually works.

Al:

Unhandled Access Violations can be caused by many things including
hardware problems, software problems, file version conflicts, Windows
Registry issues, or a combination of those things. Video problems &
file corruptions are probably what I've seen the most often.

In addition to all the other good advice Mr. Saadallah gave, there's a
couple of other things that can be important. A lot of times, folks get
a random error & then choose to "Save Changes" as they're failing out of
a drawing, only to get repeated errors trying to reopen or recover the
drawing, or when they're working with it later. Chances are high
they've saved the error right into that drawing file in the form of
corruption. I always try to advise people to keep multiple recent
copies if a drawing is important & not to save changes when erroring out
unless the changes are 'mission critical'.

Another very common cause is fragmentation within your Windows swap
file/virtual memory area. The routine defragmentation that everybody
does "religiously" once a week or so doesn't touch that area. Something
I've recommended to people that's fixed a number of these problems is to
do a defragmentation that includes the swap file area (only AFTER a
thorough Scandisk) & then set up a FIXED size large swap file (so that
computations don't push Windows to expand the swap file to include a
fragmented area). The specific way to do that in each version of
Windows is a little different from the others so if you haven't done it
before, be sure to get help before you start.

These suggestions don't fix all UAV errors but along with driver issues,
do fix alot of the most common causes.
