Displaying Line Dimensions

I am a newbie to ACAD-Lite and I am running version 2000.

When I draw a line, box, etc. the dimensions are not showing. I am expecting to see (for example) 42' 2" but all I see is the line(s) I have drawn.

Can anyone advise how I make the dimensions show above the lines I have drawn?

Thanks in advance.

You draw a line and expect a dimension entity to just appear on it's own?
Explain, use command names too (box is not a command).

AutoCAD doesn't automatically dimension anything. Here's what you do. Pick either Linear or Aligned from the Dimension menu. Then either pick endpoint to endpoint of the line, or hit Enter and then pick the line with your mouse. Pull the dimension into position and pick. To change dimension size, pick Style from the dimension menu and then Modify. Pick the Fit tab and change the Overall Scale to a larger size.
