Direct .dwl and .dwl2 files to local computer when on network share

We have a bunch of cad files that are loaded onto a sharepoint. Some these users who have read access only are having difficulties opening the files in autocad LT 2012 becuase .dwl and .dwl2 files trying to be created on the sharepoint site. Is there a way to redirect these files to their locally to their computer? I would like to avoid giving the users write permissions to the site.

No, I'm pretty sure you cannot. Unlike BAK files, DWL and DWL2 are there to lock files from being accessed by other users: I suspect you risk having more than one user opening and saving files if you do that.
