deleting layers

How do I delete a layer? I am unable to even though the layer is not current, is not layer "0" or "Defpoints",
is not a Xref dependent layer, nor does the layer contain any objects. Purging is denied me also.

You may have a BLOCK inserted on layer "XX" that

includes in its definition, an object on layer "YY".

Even though layer "YY" appears to have no objects

there are some hidden in the BLOCK definition thus

preventing you from deleting the layer. I don't know

of a simple way to sniff out the problem block...

particularly when blocks are nested several levels deep.

About the only thing that might, and mean might, work when all else fails,
is to turn all Layers on/thawed/unlocked, start WBLOCK, manually select all
the entities on screen with a window selection (avoid using the ALL option),
and create a new file.
Then see if the Layer you did not want is gone.

Otherwise, full AutoCAD + Express Tool LAYDEL is what you need.

Thank you. I discovered the problem block and have successfully deleted the unwanted layer.

I used 'Drafix for years, and am converting drawings to Lt
little by little. This annoying problem of not being allowed to delete layers
shows up unless I'm very careful to get rid of all symbols, and even markers
from the old Drafix drawings. In Drafix you could delete a layer, and all the
things on it would just go away, ah, for the simple and direct! Layers in Lt are
one of the more annoying features. I have gone to the extreme of selecting all,
exploding all, and still cannot get rid of some layers???

I find the LAYMRG command works quite well, as you can transfer everything from one layer to another which removes the layer. Useful if you have lots of layers with blocks.

Other option is using the QSelect command and selecting it that way, but it doesn't always work if I remember rightly as I think blocks aren't selected (could be wrong though)

I suspect that the choices you mention were not available in LT 2000 or earlier
