Customizing a Template (existing or new)

I've been trying to create a new template in the LT version of 2007. For some reason I'm running into trouble in what seems to be an easy process. The instructions in the HELP menu seem to give different ways (as I'm sure there are more than one) to save the DWT files.

One way, to create a new DWT, says to take any drawing and just save it as a DWT file.

Another way, editing an existing DWT, says to open the file, edit and save it through the LAYOUT command. This makes more sense to me.

I tried both ways. Neither one is actually creating a layout template. I think the issue is with the layout in the original DWG file before I switch it over to DWT. It is blank. When I add a viewport and then save it as a DWT the template file just becomes a blank viewport.

I even opened up the existing templates as DWTs and DWGs to see how they were put together vs. my files. Everything looks the same! I'm just running in circles and I feel like I'm just missing one simple thing.

If anyone can help I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Start a new empty file.

Set it up anyway you want, add everything you need (that includes layouts,
layers, dimstyles, text styles and more). Yes, one file for all of that
stuff.

when you are done, SAVEAS, select Template from the file type pulldown on
the pop-up.

To edit an existing DWT, use Windows Explorer, change the DWT to a DWG, open
the file, do what you want, SAVEAS as noted above.

Now, what has any of this to do with Layouts creation? You seem to have
confused different tasks together.

Dean,

Thanks for the step-by step. The editing through Windows Explorer worked.

The Layouts creation was just an explaination I was telling myself to trying figure out why I couldn't create a simple DWT template!

Thanks again.
