Can't copy/paste?

Any ideas why, on a client supplied drawing, I can't copy/paste my symbols within the drawing after inserting them initially with DesignCenter?

Same symbols copy/paste fine in other drawings.

Following is console dialog when I do a paste:
------------------------------------------------------

Command: _pastespec Duplicate definition of block IRR_SM_SQ ignored.
Substituting [simplex.shx] for [HELV.shx].
Substituting [simplex.shx] for [HELV.shx].
Substituting [simplex.shx] for [SOLID.shx].
Substituting [simplex.shx] for [tmodelf].
Substituting [simplex.shx] for [G:\ACAD\FONTS\BOLD.SHX].
Substituting [simplex.shx] for [BOLD.SHX].
Substituting [simplex.shx] for [ARCHHAND.SHX].
Specify insertion point:
Command:

-----------------------------------------------------

According to this, it SHOULD be working, but doesn't.
Just returns to crosshair cursor.

And what the heck is all that font substitution stuff?

This is really going to KILL my productivity on this project if I have to insert/scale/rotate from DesignCenter every time I wanna use a symbol more than once...

The duplicate definition message means that the block IRR_SM_SQ
already exists in your drawing. Since there are two (maybe competing)
blocks of the same name, the one wins who was first.

The Substituting message means that your block uses non-standard fonts
like HELV.shx which are not on your computer.

Anyway you should get a new insertion afterwards. What does LIST LAST
give?

LIST LAST finds and highlights the object I had selected and performed a COPY on.

I understand the dupe def. issue-all symbols do this if they already exist in the current dwg.-this isn't the problem.

If I select an already inserted symbol, do a COPY, then do a PASTE somehwere else, I get the appropriate "Insertion point:" prompt, but when I click the insertion point, NO symbol gets pasted, I am just returned to the "Command:" prompt and the Selection crosshair set. No errors are logged.

BTW, "Copy Selection" works, but is MUCH more cumbersome.

Also, FWIW, the drawing exhibits the same bizarre behavior in my concurrent install of LT 2000.

SOMETHING, some setting in the drawing, is causing this.

Is there a reason why you are trying to use PASTESPEC instead of the more
standard PASTECLIP, if all you are doing in Copy/Paste of a block in a
drawing? Two different commands, with two different requirements, the latter
works like it is does in all other Windows programs.

vancegrn,

why don't you use the plain simple COPY command when copying objects
within a drawing? Copy/PASTE will always create a block containing the
PASTEd objects. This may also be your problem. Have you checekd the
layer settings? Maybe you insert onto a layer that is turned off?

Dietmar: Your COPY suggestion is same as COPY SELECTION. This works, but is MUCH more cumbersome than copy/paste. Have to re-select the item each and every time you paste it. All operations are being carried on within an active, non-frozen layer.

Dean: Same behavior is exhibited by PASTECLIP. The reason for PASTESPEC is that's what the rightclick context menu default for Paste is...and I use the heck outta the context menus.

Both: Again, this is GOTTA be some layer, etc. setting WITHIN the supplied drawing, as all these operations perform as expected on ANY OTHER DRAWING with EXACTLY the same symbols as those being used within the misbehaving dwg.

You will need to post a sample of both... .

Dean:

Examples?

Don't really know what you need...

I can E-mail you the entire dwg (853K ZIP)
for you to play with...I don't think anything else
will illustrate this issue.

I had the same problem. Every time I would try to paste something from another file it would give me all that substitution stuff and return to the crosshair cursor. Could not even draw a new object in another file and paste it into the drawing. Found out that if I would close the file & AutoCAD - start up AutoCAD again - reopen the file it would work and if it stopped working again at another point, when I would reopen it - it would work. I have been using AutoCAD since R13 and am currently on 2014 since it was released and never had this problem until today.

-EXPORTTOAUTOCAD command, knock your file down to R14 format, then reopen it and try to replicate the problem.

I am working in 2014 –

The problem started when I was trying to copy / paste from another architects CAD file.

If I start a new file I can paste 1 time into it and that is it. After the 1st time this is what I get:

Command: PC

PASTECLIP Duplicate definition of block _Oblique  ignored.

Substituting [simplex.shx] for [archquik.shx].

Substituting [simplex.shx] for [Univers Condensed].

Specify insertion point:

When I pick the point the command ends but nothing was pasted. I have purged the files and tried everything I can think of. This is only the case with files that I have copied objects from that Architect. My in-house files are fine unless I paste objects from that Architect in them –then paste no longer works. I have changed every object to layers to that are in my file and exploded all blocks prior to copying. I can’t even create a new object and copy/paste in the same file after I pasted from the Architects.

Ask the Architect to "export to autocad' before sending you the file: the command is -EXPORTTOAUTOCAD (there is a dash in the name).

Also ask them to share their unique fonts with you for you to use as well. SHX fonts go in the AutoCAd FONTS folder and TTF fonts need to be installed in Windows (post back if this last part is new to you and you need help).
