Block Insertion Problem

Hello all,

I'm trying to insert a block using the "insert dialogue box".

However, when I do, if I have the box for "insertion point" unchecked, I get the error "Block Insertion Failed" (picture 1).

If I check that box, I get the error "*Invalid* Block references itself".

I have purged the drawing and there are no other blocks in the drawing.

Why would this be happening?

Also check your External References.

Or the block could be nested?

There are no xrefs in the drawing.

I'm not sure what nested block is.

What's also weird is, I can drag and drop this exact same block from the tool pallete and it works fine. Smiley Frustrated

Your TP is not accessing the exact same source in the INSERT command: start by checking the source.

I really appreciate the suggestion, but the file only exists once and in only one location. Just to show you I did look into this (just to be sure), this is what it shows when I right click and go to properties of the TP:

Here is where I'm browsing when I do insert:

But I think I found the problem, but I need someone smarter than me to fix it.

Attached is the block in question.

When you highlight everything, you'll see it has a "block reference" under the properties drop down (where it says "All").

Now, the weird thing is, I can't seem to isolate whatever that (1) is. What's even weirder is, if you highlight all the "data section" at once, it shows the block reference in the properties dropdown, but if you highlight each section individually, or break it down into groups, it doesn't show it. It only shows it when you highlight the entire section at once.

I'm very confused.

If you're able to fix it, please let me know how you did it because I have 4 or 5 other titleblocks with the same problem.

I really do appreciate everyone's help!

Try Zipping it first.

Not sure why... the file is only 40 kb...

But hopefully it'll attach it...

I'm not sure what's going on... it's not letting me attach.

I don't suppose you could PM me your email and I can email the file over to you?

I've uploaded the file to my Box account... see if you can download it here:

Are you using windows?

I ask because those speech marks in your name for the drawing are not characters that are used by windows when naming files. I would suggest you change them for the underscore character and then try again.

It is Windows... but they are not quote marks, they are two apostrophies, which Windows accepts.

It makes them easier to identify. I suppose I could get rid of them, but that hasn't caused issues in the past...

I can't open it as I only have LT 2009 here, but  here's a question.

Are you opening that exact drawing and then trying to insert the block in the same drawing?

That could be where your circular referencing is coming from.. ie your trying to insert the drawing into itself.

No... they're definetly seperate drawings.

I'm opening a brand new drawing and trying to insert it.

Here's a 2007 version...

So it's a block inside your posted block: nested blocks don't behave like unnested blocks. I suspect your TP is inserting the nested block.

Back to the original problem though: at first test I also get the 'failed' error message. I changed your file name and took out the () and it seemd to work just fine after that.

I've just inserted the 2007 version straight into a drawing of mine without a problem.

So as well as Dean's suggestion, I suggest you keep one saved down to 2007 as a spare

EDIT: Having a look at the 2007 file. Did you insert the block and then save it down? If you did. Explode the block into it's component parts, and PURGE the drawing as well.

Yep, it was the parenthesis in the name.

Uh... never knew that mattered.

Thanks so much!!!!
