AutoCAD LT 2011 - Layer Control

Is there a reason why the Layer control functions on the 2011 LT are so much slower than our old 2005 LT?  We tend to use a lot of layers and commands like 'select all' and 'select all but current' are very slow by comparison. How can I speed up the layer control functions?

Computer Specs?

LT 2005 was a much "lesser" hog of RAM and CPU power with repsect to LT 2011.

... and I don't think LT2005 used Microsoft's .NET for the LAYER command (and in LT2011 it's a Palette that is always on and active, in LT2005 it was the older less capable pop-up).

Also, in LT2011, don't leave the Layer Palette open (it actively scans and updates on the fly, reason you can do so much with it while in an active command) and turn off SHOWLAYERUSAGE variable.
