The problem described in this thread (see jebebara's 5/12/05 message)
started affecting my Autocad LT 2005. I spent much time searching the
newsgroup for a solution, but there was nothing useable in any of the
postings.
Here, now, is the solution that Autodesk Safety Net Support gave me. It was
easy to make these changes and Autocad LT started working again.
Background: My computer is an Asus Z80K with Windows XP SP2. I had been
using Autocad LT successfully for about 9 months. There was a lapse of
time, perhaps 1 month that I did not do any drafting. Then when I next
tried to start Autocad LT by double clicking on the icon, the hourglass
symbol showed momentarily and nothing happened, no error message, and no
Autocad LT opening screen. If I tried to open a drawing by double clicking
on the drawing name, I received an error message stating that Windows could
not find the file. I downloaded Autocad LT SP1 and installed it. Still,
got same results.
Analysis: The problem occurs due to Windows XP SP2.
Solution:
1. Go to Control Panel / System / Advanced / Performance / Settings / Data
Execution Prevention. Click to activate the bullet which says "Turn on DEP
for all programs... except ...". Click on Add, then browse to folder
Autocad LT 2005 and find the file aclt.exe. Select that file and click
Open. This should add the aclt.exe program to the list in the DEP window.
(Note: on my system the program name is "not applicable".) Click OK twice.
You should now be back in Control Panel.
2. Click to open Internet Options / Advanced. Scroll down to the Security
section and uncheck the box which says "Check for publisher's certificate
revocation." Click OK. You should now be back in Control Panel.
3. In the menu bar (of Control Panel), choose Tools / Folder Options / File
Types. Scroll down and verifiy that DWG is associated with File Type of
Autocad LT Drawing. If you select DWG, it will show in the details box (at
bottom) the Autocad LT icon and (at least on my system) the words "not
applicable". Click OK. You will now be back in Control Panel. Just close
it at this point.
4. Autocad LT should now work.

I am presently having fun with this 'exact' problem.
I am running on an AMD Atholon64 3500+ on an A8N-E motherboard. 1.5Gb RAM,
WinXP Pro with SP2.
This issue began after uninstalling the AutoDesk Land Desktop and Civil
Design software and rebooting the machine. I have wiped the registry,
uninstalled, reinstalled, and rebooted in every possible combination trying
to get AutoCad LT 2004 to start again to no avail.
Looks like a full reinstall of windows for me as well. what a waist of time!
