Windows 7 Mouse (trackball) keys don't work

I've just installed LDC 2009 on a computer that was upgraded to a Win 7 OS. For the most part Land works fine when I run it in XP compatibility mode. One problem I have is that half of the keys I have programmed on my MS Trackball Explorer don't work.

I have 4 buttons + scroll wheel and 2 of the buttons don't respond. They work in all the other programs I've tried them in including Civil 3D 2011 64-bit. The driver is MS Intelipoint 8.0 but I've tried 7.1 with no luck. I can't get 6.0 for XP 64-bit to load even in compatibility mode. Also Land isn't the only 32-bit program I've tried it in. All the others respond.

I know that it's unlikely that anyone has the same setup but hope someone has resolves something similar and will have a hint.

BTW: I’ll share something I realized the other day. I was debating weather to install Land at all. We still have projects that are in Land but I though this might be a good time to make a break. I’ve realized that I’m going to have to keep Land running for the foreseeable future. The reason is that we still have a lot of projects from the days of D.C.A., Softdesk and early Land. These projects used a proprietary database format, NOT Access. So in order to bring any of those projects into Civil 3D I’m going to have to open them in Land first to convert the point, alignment, surface, etc. databases first. Also I find Land convenient to open and do a quick deed or survey plot for small projects.
