Time to open a drawing WAAAAAY to long!

So, when the boss gets a drawing from one of the guys in the office, it takes a tremendous amount of time for it to open.
The rest of us can open the same drawing with little delay. so where does the problem lye, the sender or the recipient. How can we determine the problem. the problem is new. the boss did add a new harddrive recently, and moved all his drawing and project files to this new drive. not sure how that would affect, he being the recipient. Drawings are LDT 04. we've checked for xrefs, attached images, anything we think may make Acad "look" somewhere else, but we do not pretend to know the ends and outs of acads file system. any direction would be GREATLY Appreciated !!

Is your boss opening the drawing by double clicking on the drawing in Windows Explorer? If he's doing that on the new drive Acad may be searching the new drive for the files it needs to open before it looks on the drive where the program still resides.

Hey Allen,
Most of the time he'll grab the drawing icon and drag from the explorer window to the ldt04 icon and drop. Could this be the issue, if so you would think it would happen with every drawing? I assume he should open ldt then file, open?

If the properties of the Icon are set up correctly it shouldn't be a problem. Try opening LDT first and then open the drawing from there and see if there's any difference. It's not a sure thing I'm right about the cause. It's just the first thing that came to mind that might explain the problem.

Also, check for invalid paths to printers, plot styles, and/or support
files.

Another factor can be his Antivirus software is scanning the drawings when
opened. Sometimes those scans can cause significant delays when opening
files and loading references.A simply test is to disable it temporarily.

A file monitor utility that lists file activity is very handy for
troubleshooting issues like this.

Niel
what file monitor utility would you recommend and how do they function.

Here is the one I use.
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Programming/Other-Programming-Files/Filemon.shtml

When it is running you can see all the files the OS is accessing in realtime
listed in the app window. With ACAD running, start the monitor and load a
drawing. Watch the files being accessed and if you see the list hang on a
certain file, that may be a clue to what is causing slow performance. As
this tool doesn't provide much information about the files, you need to use
your intuition and ingenuity to figure out what is happening. For example if
you know your Antivirus app is a process called AVG.exe you would recognize
it in the flile list and could then focus on that app. If you are not sure
what file or app is hanging you can always do a web search on the file or
app to get more info about it.

Of course this tool is not a sure bet, but it has helped me many times to
identify file issues.

Thanks Neil, This looks like something I should have had in my "tool box" all along. I'll give it a test tomorrow and post the results!!
