i guess i need to know how to start a new one, because i think i am not starting the process correctly. i make a new folder in the symbol manager folder with all the symbols i am going to be needing. then i go to the symbol manager to try to create a new symbol set. that's where i get lost. i've tried several different things and can't get it to work. maybe if you could let me know how to do it from the start.

thanks

1. AT SYM MANAGER PRESS MANAGE

2.SYMBOL SET:

existing: give your SS a name

        Key: give a corresponding KEY
name

        Description: Ditto

File: give a unique file name
<name>.dbf

check import symbols

3. Press Add  Key

give a name ( hint : use the names from 2)

Value: enter path to symbols ( make sure it is exactly
correct)

4. Pattern if you want to filter files here is you
chance

        set defaults
( insert layer, scales, lisp routines ....)

set Cat..palett..( here you can organize by drag and drop...

5. see 4.

6. check create slides ( my screen shot shows new
only but all would be good)

7. slide library ( if you need one here is your
chance)

8. press OK.    each file will be
opened so be on hand for this step; you get to accept the file name for the
symbol name or edit on command line.

Wheew! That will do it.

Foot note: if you are sharing as I suspect ... Set
the dbf file to a network location That will take some tinkering...  once
you get your share business squared away the easiest way to get all your users
to see them is to copy YOUR SDSK.dfm file to all THERE machines. ( please make
back up copies first)

Good Luck

For what it's worth... I had all our company standard blocks in symbol manager. I switched to using palettes and have found them much easier to create & maintain. Users seem to like them better, they not only create layers but bring things like linetypes, colors & other layer settings in with them. And since they are plain old AutoCAD they will work with Map & Civil 3D. The scale bar was the only thing that people still wanted from SM so I created a dynamic block out of it to handle different scales rather than the lsp/attribute method that symbol manager uses.

Say, You think you can share that dyno scale bar? If I may be so bold.

I have the tool palette path in Options set to a network location & then make that location read only. If you to create sub-groups of palettes or a place where users can create their own stuff, use the *_TOOLPALETTEPATH command to make macros on a toolbar and they can click buttons to reset the path & load different xtp files.

Thats what I do, but I'm finding it difficult to - lets say I have palette
A, B & C and I add content to each - the other WS are not picking that up
unless I export then import on each WS! Wher have I gon wrong?

Thanks

I have all palettes xtp & AcTpCatalog.atc on the network. I might be missing something here but I think the key is managing the security on the network directory so that you are the only one who has write access. I think if you don't, you can make changes, but if someone else has AutoCAD open when you make the changes, they have the old definitions in memory and when they close it overwrites your changes.

But if you are importing the palettes, I would think they would be local at that point.

I would prefer they way you describe - lock all users out and be the sole
propriter of the TP manipulation ( or at least the director)

Yes, I'm still learning their quirks but I have found if you don't lock them down once they are networked, they get all mucked up, inadvertantly just because of the way the software works.

Hi,

I'm not disagreeing with your methods, just never made time to do it myself,
but the wording implied that Symbol Manager can't create layers, bring in
linetypes etc.

"they not only create layers but bring things like linetypes, colors & other
layer settings in with them"

You can do this with Symbol Manager and anything else you like. It's only a
matter of setting it up.

I just want to thank you for the graphic scale block. We are just moving to civil3d and it has been one of those little things that took forever to get simplified.

Thank you,
Tina
