Sampling Surface

In my process of creating profiles, I get a question that I never really know how to answer. When I choose profiles, existing ground, sample from surface and I do my surface sampling for a surface I have sampled before (I usually re-do this because of changes) I get a message that asks "Vertical alignment already exists, retain finish surfaces?: What exactly is this asking for, and do you have any advice on which to choose when?

Hey H8;

It all depends on where you are in the stage of design whether you answer
this question with a "Yes". I'm of the opinion that this should have a
Default answer of "No".

Since this "option" gives you the chance to completely start over you need
to be judicious when you apply that Yes. The "vertical surfaces" under
consideration here is an error in semantics by our Benevolent Dictators at
AD. They are describing ALL the Profiles already contained within the
database.

So if you only have the EG Profile, you're pretty safe to say Yes here. If
you have changed the location of the Horizontal Alignment and need to cut a
new EG Profile, but for whatever reason you wish to retain part of the
earlier FG Profile's design, then you definitely do not want to answer Yes
here.

As Rush Limbaugh used to say - "Words mean things" and a pretty poor choice
of words was used in this case IMHO.

I'm somewhat confused by your reply. First of all, what exactly is the error is semantics. i.e. what do they mean when they say "vertical surfaces". What exactly is this asking? Is it asking if I want to throw away any surface information tied to any profiles? I'm confused because you said if I need to cut a new EG profile and retain part of the earlier FG profile, you choose no. Which in my understanding is thowing everything away or not retaining earlier FG profile. Thanks for your help.

Instead of being in left field, Don is on the Left Coast.

Normally when I make a profile I have a button that changes all the colors
on my profile to my plotting requirements, etc. When that question asked if
I want to keep the finish surfaces all the layers and colors stay intact if
I am re-doing that same alignment. As far as I can tell, that is about it.
Just experiment, it is not too drastic if you answer either way.

If you've already done some design work and have a Finish grade defined for
the centerline or any of the offsets, answering no will remove any and all
of those profiles of the current alignment only. A yes response will retain
them.

Sorry, I mixed up the Yes and No response. Jeff Mishler's reply corrected my
error in semantics.

Two bads in a row today - I'm going back to bed now. 😞
