Profile Fatal Error 2008

Ok here's a good one for you guys. LDD 2008. We have an existing surface, set current and an existing alignment set current. We can sample the alignment but if I select retain finish grade surface (even though there isn't one) LDD 2008 gives us a fatal error and crashes. If I do NOT retain and continue on it's ok until I go to create profile then it promptly crashes. Thoughts? Heidi

Have you attempted a Repair as of yet Heidi?

Have you already reported this situation to your reseller?

We might wait on John Mayo to get to work in the morning, and see what his
2K8 Civil Design Companion will do at his firm?

well now I got it to reproduce the issue on all 4 boxes. So it ain't the installation. Using both Create Full Profile and Surface Profile. With new and old alignments from 2004 and 2008.

So what gives..

Situation has been reported to reseller and subscription center. So far no resolution.

Ok after lots of trial and error here's what we've discovered. I've dedicated my whole morning to this.

#1 it's a conversion from 2004 to 2008 issue definately.

#2 so far I have to remove the DTM folders from the project. Create a new DTM folder. And do NOT keep the finished surface.

#3 the alignment seems to be fine other than the finished grade surface.
Not sure if we have to start the whole project over though from scratch, I havent' tried to use the 2004 project folders yet. Although that could be an issue also.

All right, just got off the phone with Autodesk Tech Support. It seems this is a bug, caused by my surface name being too long. Apparently they didn't tell a soul and shortened the amount of characters allowed in naming of a surface or your DTM. The new figure is 10 max. If you go over 10, you get a fatal error and your machine crashes.

Also, once you rename it, you still need to resample your alignment and NOT retain any finished surfaces.

They're writing a White page on it today.

They're Deskers Heidi - they don't need to tell us LDT folks anything.

Since they hope that we'll "abandon ship" to get aboard the C3D boat, next
time it reaches our port-o-call.
;0)

Maybe I'm now starting to believe the poster who mentioned that Autodesk was
now a Bentley affiliate?

!! NOT !!

Well, thanks for solving the mystery for me, Heidi. I've been banging my head against the desk all morning and sending Autodesk countless error reports. I name all my finished surfaces with the date, such as FG_05-29-07, which ends up being 11 characters (obviously).

So, when is that service pack due?

Has anyone seen any documentation from Autodesk on this cute little change yet?

We were having the same problem with AutoCAD 2007. I changed the DTM file name to 10 characters and it didn't crash anymore. Then I renamed the file to "1234567890123456789012345" (35 characters) and it didn't crash. When I change the DTM to "12345678901234567890123456" (36 characters), it crashes. So the limit (at least in 2007) seems to be 35 characters max for the DTM file name. I haven't tried 2008 out yet.

Wow, 35 character surface names?
If you are having issues with this make sure that you contact Autodesk's technical support so that they realize how many have a issue with this name limit in 08.
When i contacted them they said they were working on a solution but couldn't say what or when... Message was edited by: cnapierala

I was told by ACAD support that in 2007 35 is the max characters and in 2008, 10 is th max. They didn't tell a sole about the character length change. It is supposed to show up in a white paper and be fixed soon, I hope. Heidi

Any news on this white paper? I'm having the _exact_ same trouble that was
described in the original post, although my surface name is only 8
characters. Now what?

no news yet. make sure all of your assocatied files with the DTM, if you in LDD, changed names to the name of your surface. If you in Civil 3D, not sure what else to tell you.

I am encountering the same problem with the fatal errors and my surfaces name is less than 10 characters.

I was wondering when you set you surface current and do a quick view are you getting the correct results. In one project everything works fine in another none of the surface are working? Any suggestions?

There's not much to add, but it appears that if the surface OR the project
(or possibly the alignment, according to some) was ever named with more than
10 characters, then you'll just have to recreate the alignments, or possibly
just the FG vertical alignments. Nobody really knows for sure... Autodesk
did respond to me, which I've documented here: http://tinyurl.com/2kmym7
I'm sorry to say that you probably won't like their response - the fix will
be out "in the next few weeks". I hope your clients are patient!
