profile arg vs aws

in the effort to propogate our network with the same customisation, which one works best. i noticed that the arg files arent used with 2008 anymore (unless im mistaken) and the aws (workspace) is now used. should i customise that, however thats located in the users profile ?

any advice.

All of my customizations are stored in a cui file. I keep all required lsp,
button icons, etc in a net folder with said cui. Each station gets that path
set up as a support path. Our workspaces are imported/Transferred through
the cui editor if need be. I also keep the arg file for support paths,
global variables, etc.

where is the arg file loaded, i see that the /p switch is pointed to the land desktop (profile.aws) now. im not quite sure i understand the interaction between them all.

but the cui looks promising as your detailed.

The arg is loaded from the Profile tab in the Options dialog. We load this
first on a new release to set the paths & variables. Then we load the cui,
drag & drop workspaces if needed from the Transfer tab of the cui.

All set to go.

Here's what I do:

Create image for new install & install it on my computer.

Tweak the CUI however you want. copy the local tweaked ones back up to the image.

I set the file paths & options the way I want them and export an arg file. I name the args LDT & MAP. I open them in a text editor and name the profile something unique (i.e not what Autodesk names them)

Use MS Orca to edit the MSI file & change the target icon string to load from my company profile from the arg:

"C:\Program Files\AutoCAD Civil 3D Land Desktop Companion 2008\acad.exe" /p "C:\Program Files\AutoCAD Civil 3D Land Desktop Companion 2008\LDT.arg"

bat file runs the image & copies various files including the args to the appropriate locations.

It's a one click installation and all your customization gets integrated & if someone else logs on to that computer, they will get all the right stuff without having to run anything to update the defualt instal.

does the /p *.arg install run for 2008

Yes. You can try it on a local machine. just export an arg, name it LDT (or whatever you want as long as it matches the target string) place it in the root program directory (or again, where ever you want). edit it & rename the profile in the arg file. paste the /p part of the string into your icon target. change a bunch of stuff in options & restart from the icon. It will build a new profile based on the arg as you defined it.

BTW, it will automatically generate the aws files. The CUI is a different animal from the profile/arg/aws

John-

Your install process sounds pretty good. Question? Where in the msi can I can the target icon path? I'm curious to see your install bat routine as well. Do you mind sending me a copy?
