OK - Riddle me this.

All,

I have a simple drawing that consists of two drawings xrefed into model
space, a raster image, inserted blocks put in layout tab with our
titleblock, north arrow and scale. I also have some notes that have been put
on the layout tab.

My layout tab is set to 1:1 and the titleblock is inserted at a scale factor
of 12 (I know its the stupid insunits thing). I have created a viewport to
show the xrefs that are in model space. All of the xrefs are inserted on
layer 0, which are on. The titleblock, arrow, scale and notes are
inserted/drawn on their respective layers which are on also.

So far so good....

I go to plot out the drawing, and do a plot preview - only my viewport is
showing on the drawing! I do a layer purge all and audit. It finds one error
and says it fixed it. I do another plot preview and everything looks good
again.

I save the drawing, go out of LDT and bring the drawing back up again. I do
a plot preview and, once again only the viewport is showing!!!!

I now go into each of the xrefs (just to be sure) audit them. It doesn't
help!
I create a new project, and copy the drawing over to the new project name
and it doesn't help. It seems to be just project-related as other projects
seem to be working okay. As long as I do an audit and it fixes that one
error ((AcDbBlockReference(F76F) BTR Id invalid)) then all is fine again.

Anyone ever seen anything like this before?

I CAN replicate this on several machines.

Thanks,

Rick

You might try -purge (at the command line) and purge Registered Apps say yes
to * so no to verify each app.

Scott Mcearon showed me this a couple of weeks ago. Amazing how much junk
accumulates over time. He also installed a program on one users machine
which will clear directories of all the junk. (I can't remember the name)

See if that helps.

Your paperspace tab is considered a block in the drawing. I have seen this
same issue with currupted paper space tabs that only show the color white
for anything and everthing. try copycliping the objects in the tab and then
pasting them into a new tab. Make sure to turn the viewport back on after
re-pasting the viewport.

By new tab I mean create new and not copy-move down.

Rick,

First things first. Never did I say never? Never xref drawings on to the zero layer! Why you ask? Well the zero layer is a special layer that has special properties. You may or may not have ever know that but the best way to deal with xref's is to put them on an independent layer for each one. The reason is, if the xref's are on their own layer then you can manipulate them easier such as isolate or freeze individual layer for each xref independently without having to unload them with the xref utility. If you freeze the zero layer you will freeze all xref's and cause some interesting things to happen in the display of information depending what labeling routine you are using or property you want to display. So after saying all of this try putting the xref's on independent layers and see how that works to solve your mastery and in the future use zero layer to create blocks only.

CB,
The paper space is not currupted when this occurs. This is a 'feature' that
allows you to view your drawing as it is to be plotted and is controlled, on
a per layout basis, by the option "Display Plot Styles" in the layout/plot
configuration dialog.

Can you post or email me the drawing? I don't think the Xref's will be
required.

Why the folks at my current firm would be aghast at that news! 🙂

I like to use "XREF-" as the preface to those layers you're advocating.

"Gee - now I wonder what's on those layers?" 🙂

Yes, I troubleshooted for that as well. As well as Display Plot Styles I
converted the plot style from a .ctb file to a .stb and then back to a .ctb.
The only fix was to ditch the tab and use or start another. It was only
that tab doing it as there were several others in the same drawing. Since
then a few microstation conversions have caused the same issue. I will post
the dwg if it should run acrossed it again.

Don,
we use XR-XXXX for ref layer names. But I am always surprised at how many people do not know the real function of the zero layer or the Defpoints layer. I have a standing rule not to use zero for anything other then creating blocks leave Defpoints alone and do not freeze either.

Double click in the viewport, making the viewport active.
Go to your layer dialog box, and check to see if layer 0 is frozen.(or whatever layer the xrefs are on)

Bill,

Thanks for the reply. The problem is tht the xrefs ARE the only things that
show up. It's all the stuff that I inserted onto the paperspace (border,
north arrow, scale and some notes that are NOT showing up when I plot or
preview. The viewport and all associated stuff is fine. And I
quadruple-checked that all of those are on the correct layer and that they
are all turned on (no, not excited).

Hey Rick;

Take a New dwg file in the same Project, and see if you XREF all of the
items (except for the Raster Image) as the malcontent contains into this New
dwg, will you get the proper appearance then?

I've seen Raster Images produce something near to this "effect" in my past.

Have you looked at the layer state in the layout without activating a
viewport and check if any layers were set to not plot?

Is the contents of the view port showing? Viewport can also be on non plot layer or off.

Why is north arrow in PS? That is good way to have north one in viewport & a different angle on paper.

Same thing possible for scale. This tends to be personal preference.

Rick,
It sounds like maybe paperspace is not set to plot last in your plot driver settings. or your draw order needs to be re-arranged. Try that!
