Data directory - prototype path error

I've recently started using LDT2006 and have been having installation issues. When I fire up Land, I get an "Error creating data directory." msg, followed by "The prototype path does not exist..." When I go to User preferences to check the prototype path, I get "Error reading the program path..." All msgs are shown in the attached GIF file.

I've restarted my computer and the problem hasn't gone away. From our company's default profile, the program works, and all paths are set to the "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Autodesk\Autodesk Land Desktop 2006\R16.2\Data" directory.

I've already attempted to delete/redeploy my profile to reset it, but it's had no effect. Any ideas on how to fix this error? Thanks.

Take a look at your sdsk.dfm file and check the path for the line PROT

Also look at your loginname.dfm file. There is also a PROT line here. I believe this one is empty by default.

Make sure you don't have a path with restricted permissions.

Thanks- I ended up having problems with my Map & Land profiles loading the same CUI, and once I got that issue worked out the problem went away.

I'm having the same problem with LDT 2007. I was just wodering what you did to fix your Map & Land profiles loading the same CUI.

If you are trying to make sure that each Windows icon/shortcut brings up the
correct program, you need to edit the icon/shortcut target field.
Right-click on the icon & choose Properties. The target must call up the
appropriate AutoCAD Profile in the command.

Here is one for LDT which uses a profile of Land Desktop
"C:\Program Files\Autodesk Land Desktop 2007\acad.exe" /p "Land Desktop"

Here is one for Map which uses a profile of MapLandDevelopmentDesktop
"C:\Program Files\Autodesk Land Desktop 2007\acad.exe" /p
"MapLandDevelopmentDesktop"

Thanks John

But i was having the same problem as sdmcdonald on Aug 26 05 about the Data Directory - prototype path error. I read that he fixed his problem by changing the profiles and i wanted to know what he did.

My settings are just as you wrote. So that wasn't the answer.

My problem is a ERROR CREATING DATA DIRECTORY, than a "prototype path does not exist. Set a Valid path with the "users preferences" error, so i click users preference and get a "ERROR READING THE PROGRAM PATH, YOU MUST RESTART AUTOCAD"

Also i was using LDT 2007 just fine the other day. No problems. Not sure what went wrong.

Thanks Again

I don't have time right now to go search that post but... The profiles
should call up a specific CUI. One for Land one for Map. You set that in the
Option dialog, Files Tab. Look for the Main customization file. If I have
time I will look up the other post & get back if no one else does.

Make sure that the correct path for you prototypes is set in your sdsk.dfm
This file is located in C:\Documents and Settings\\Local
Settings\Application Data\Autodesk\Autodesk Land Desktop
2007\R17.0\enu\Support.
Open with notepad and look for the following line PROT=(C:\Documents and
Settings\All Users\Application Data\Autodesk\Autodesk Land Desktop
2007\R17.0\Data\PROTOTYPES\,Project Prototypes)
I am assuming your prototype is kept on your local machine, if not modify
the path above to your network location

Rick S and John M

Thank You both for all your help.
It ended up being a search path was missing under the Options, Files, Support File dialog. I added the search path for the sdsk. dfm file and LDT 2007 is working.

Thanks again.

For future reference, that dialog box put the paths into the sdsk.dfm file
as Rick was nice enough to point out.

I have the same problem for 2006. I looked/searched for the file sksk.dfm file but I can't find it. I also don't have the folder "local settings" under c:\documents and settings.

Are there other files that PROT= could be set in?

I don't know whether you searched for the same letter combination as your
post adsylva, but it's sdsk.dfm that you should have used.

That "nomenclature" goes back to the days when it was still Softdesk, by the
look of the four letters used.

HTH and I was only able to find one of them, on my PC.

Just wanted to throw in my experience...

I was having problems with this error, but I wasn't able to find a solution. This thread seemed to be the most relevant, so I tried everything on here. I also reinstalled Windows and AutoCAD.

In the end, I was experiencing this problem because of Roaming Profiles with accounts without full Domain Admin privileges (local Administrator privileges combined with Domain Power User was not enough, presumably because of the roaming aspect).

I know now that LDD does not support roaming profiles, but didn't know this until after I had spent days trying to work around the issue. I imagine that this can be worked around with clean local "Documents and Settings" folders and full Domain Admin prileges for every user on your network, but that's just a guess.

In the end, our solution is to scrap roaming profiles altogether, but I hope this helps someone else experiencing these problems. Important to understand for anyone administering Autodesk products:
