cut fill map

I am required by the City I am submitting plans to show areas of cut and fill in the following categories: 0 to 4', 4.01' to 8', and 8.01 and above.

Anyone know a way to do this in Land Desktop from an existing surface and a surface generated from templates?

I can do slope maps really easy, but have never had a reason for a categorized cut fill exhibit.

Thanks in advance.

What you need to do is make a volume surface for EG & FG. Take that surface
& display Elevations set to your desired range.

You may have mistaked me for someone who is well versed in LDD. Can you walk me through the steps if I have both surfaces defined in terrain model explorer?

I don't have the time right now. Maybe John does. But...

Look up Calculating Grid Volumes in help. Once you have calculated the
Cut/Fill for the site you will have a Volume Surface. You can the display
your ranges based on that surface. Works quite nicely.

Now your gonna' make me put on a thinking cap & you may have mistaken me for
the same. 😉

Start in the Terrain menu. Select Stratum (define the two surfaces to
compare) & then define a Site (the area to analyze).

Once you have a stratum & site you can run the volume. Either composite
(most accurate) or grid method. When you do this a volume surface will be
created. The volume surface will have relative elevations with the zero
elevation contours representing the intersection of the two surfaces.

Once the volume surface is created, set it current & use the Surface
Display, Elevation settings (specify your ranges) & then either 2D or 3D
banding to get the pretty picture (this is all in the terrain menu as well).

Richard the same type of "boundaries" can be produced by using the Composite
Surface (it's the only choice for me nowadays, but I'll need to explain
later, in the interest of time), and creating the necessary Contours for the
depths you've mentioned.

Terrain>Create Contours and then specify the Composite Surface you created
the Volume Stratum for.

Don't specify Civil Contour Objects, just use the Polylines.

Once those contours/polylines are produced you can then erase the ones
unnecessary to Austin's directions, produce a Line that bisects the regions
you've mentioned at 1st.

Then use the Boundary command to create the closed polylines that will be
useful for getting the areas they've asked you to produce.

You can then create the Mtext entity(s) to labels those distinct areas -
square feet or acres or both.

When you display the ranges that you set, the LDT commands automatically
create the shaded boundaries in the colors you choose & it will also create
a table with the color, ranges, percent of area & area.

And thanks for reminding me of Steve Cannon's wonderful tools that go above
and beyond the LDT tools John.

His tool will produce a polyline that can then be hatched rather easily,
instead of the hours involved with LDT's myriad entities.

Please see the ReadMe inside the attached Zip file for further information
regarding the setup for the DVB file.

It's currently set for the 2004 release.

As he was a highly useful contributor here, and hasn't had a "hand" here or
on the C3D DG, I'm wondering if his firm has gone to another app for their
firm - instead of a Desker tool?

I never cared for either the three options for Slope ranges from the Terrain
menu:
2D Solids;
3D Faces;
or Poly Faces;
...since they produce so many entities.

But hatching polylines was/is right up my alley John.
