Creating Points for Grading or Slopes?

My boss, is set in his ways and I know there is better ways to do this.  Is there a way to create points for grading/ slope work in autocad Civil 3D or Autodesk Land Desk 2009 so that you do not have to manually calculate every single point so that it will have the grade or flow you need?
I was reading some other posts here and they were talking a lot about 3d Pline and Surfaces. Can anyone tlak to me more about that?
I been playing around with stuff but nothing is working.  What I did was basically create a grid in a area that I would like to be graded.  Then I created points in the intersections of each grid. (So its a point every 50 foot or 100 foot or whatever).  But I want to be able to do a few steps and have the point elevations change to the exact grade or slope over the distances or area I want.  OR to have it all grade/ slope to a existing elevation if I want.   I am really trying to avoid pulling a calculator out and calculate an elevation for 100 or 200 points where I have to enter each one manually
By the way my existing areas that I work in are all in 2D.

Hi,

While I can't spend the time teaching you how to do grading in Land Desktop, I can point out that you do have tools to create points based on slope and/or elevation relationships to other 3D elements. See the Help file for the various methods for creating COGO points.
