count that text

just got a tree survey from another firm.

all the trees are described with the same symbol and simple text, such as 6"A (for 6" ash)
or 12"W (for 12" white oak).

how can I quickly table these out so that I can find how many 6" ashes there are, 12"
oaks, 6" oaks, 8" pines, etc. etc.. ?

basically I need a list of each species with the number of each size provided. there are
over a thousand trees on this plan.

assume I have no access to original point data.

looking for brilliant suggestions only 😉

Hi doug if you have point data it should be as simple as listing points. If
all you have is plain text & you have Tool pac you can make a txt file of
selected text. If not you may have some OT coming your way.

If you don't have either you are welcome to send me the file with your
instructions Tool pac can take only a few minute to out put.

That rules me out. But I had this on my todo list anyway so if you can
wait till Monday morning? Email me at dotson at dotsoft.com so I can
have something to reply to, maybe include the text in a dwg?

thanx, I have toolpac.

I wasn't too keen on the idea of writing it out to excel and then learning how to get
excel to sort them up for me.

well see what Terry can do.......I have high hopes.

the end result will probably need to be something like a table with sizes across the top
and species down the axis.

Can you Filter or Qselect for a test value of 6"*?

How about using the Edit-Find command. You can use this to search for all
instances of 6" A and even convert them to the full spelling. The routine
also gives you a count of the text strings changed.

Gentlemen it seems as if there is a Doug-Terry confederation just about
ready to handle this through ToolPac.

I would hope that Doug would return to share his experiences with the rest
of us on Monday?

Time will tell.

Now let's see if anyone can guess what my SpellCheck wished to provide as
the replacement for ToolPac?
:-o

It might have been appropriate - if all of these trees had been recently
visited by a low-flying, chain-saw wielding lumberjack. 😉

Doug

if you can write the info to excel the "frequency" function will count the
info.

Don, I use this to summarize timber trespass missing trees count after the
low flying saw. Sorts the stump tally by diameter classes after I export
the data from a timber cruisng program.

that was pretty close to what i was gonna do, but first I would have to examine all the
strings for all the various permutations. there is no master list of each different
size/string. it would be possible to miss one.

terry was able to construct a routine that gave me a nice excel spreadsheet that basically
counted the occurence of each similar string.

i then copied the string column and did a wild card replacement on the copy to remove all
the size data.

in the original string column, i wild card removed all the species data.

i now have three columns that can be sorted by species, then size, then count.

all is well 🙂
