Can the DWG project folder be renamed

Wanting to know if the "dwg" folder under the "proj" directory can be deleted or renamed so that it doesn't create that folder or it is renamed in the setup of a new project. I understand that there is alot of info stored in that directory, but I would like to relocate it to the directory that the autocad files are stored. This will better suite my directory structure. If you have any suggestions it would be helpful.
Thanks,
Dave

Yep, been a lot of talk on this and other NG's
about how people think this directory structure sucks.  All that aside
(Including my personal opinion), just let it create the directory and then
ignore it.  When you set up the project, set the "fixed path" for the
drawings to where you want them for that project.  That is (one, and in my
opinion) the best solution.

Also, search this NG for "Project
sub-directories".  It talks about exactly what you're asking.

Thanks for the reply.

I currently have a structure setup as follows:

each main project is assigned a proj no. (v23, v24, v25 etc...)

f:\V23(my main proj no.)\(sub projects)\

there may be many sub projects under the main proj no. dir, with 3 sub dirs under each sub projects:

1. \drawings\ may folders that contain our autocad dwgs (fixed path from create project command)
2. \calc\ calculations for the proj
3. \proj\ LDD data info directories

each sub project will contain all the data for that part of the total project under the that dir.

My question is, has anyone seen any problems with this setup? One of the problems I am having is that the software keeps creating "dwg" folders under various folders in my proect with nothing in them.

Thanks,

Dave

Hi,

This issue has been discussed many time in the NG.

Ultimately the ALDD project system is an indexing system to help you find
your data.

It is designed to work so that you have a relatively limited number of
"Project Directories" under which you find "Projects". Once you have found
the Project then you have all the project data available. By default it
keeps its drawings in a DWG directory under the project, however this is
optional at the time of starting a project and the drawings can be
elsewhere. It does store settings data in the DWG directory regardless of
where the drawings are.

If you choose to use the system you've described then you will find that you
have lost the ability to limit the number of Project Directories - you will
need one for every project. Every ALDD Project will have the same name
"proj" as in your line 3

If you can live with the potential confusion and additional work associated
with this go for it.

I couldn't agree more. And let me drill in a point that Laurie touched on.

My company did 422 jobs in 1999. So in the first drop down box on the top
of the "AECOPEN" and "AECNEW" dialog box (labeled Project Path), I would
have 422 project paths in that drop down box for the year 1999 alone.

But don't stop there, I have 2000, 2001, and 2002 to add in that box also.
So if you want to sort through that many items in a list box to find what
your looking for... go for it 🙂

To not leave you hanging as to what you should do, go read the thread called
"Project sub-directories" in this NG.

Good luck.
