CAD FILES IN ESRI GIS

I have a dwg that I have created. I have created a layer for the dwg with a specific line color and type. When I bring the file into ESRI GIS and click on the properties, none of the layers have come in with the file. What do I need to do to set my drawing up correctly so the layers will be selectable in GIS. I am attaching the file so someone might be able to help me out.

Instead of trying to use the CAD file in ArcGIS convert the cad file to shp
with the Mapexport tool and select the properties you want to take with it
as attributes. I take it you have the MAP export tool if you are posting in
the land desk top group?

By defult ESRI symbolizes drawings using color, linetype and line weight
assuming you add the drawing to the map using the individual feature classes
with the blue icons. The layer information is there in the attribute table
which you can view by right clicking on the the drawing in the table of
contents and selecting Open Attribute Table. If you wish to symbolize by
layer, then go to the layer properties (By layer I mean layer of information
in the map within ArcGIS. Not autocad layers). Select the symbology tab and
set it to use Unique Values based on the layer field. Then import all
values.

If you add the drawing to the map using the white icon with the compass
symbol, it brings the drawing in as a raster (picture) which does not allow
you to do anything but see and print the drawing.

I greatly appreciate your reply. I have done what you suggested but when I select Open Attribute Table, it does not contain any information about the DWG, only headings. If you have any advice on how to fix this, I would greatly appreciate it. Also, do you suggest a place on the web that might give me step by step instructions on creating DWG files for this specific use? I'm sorry if I'm asking dumb questions but, GIS is a whole new world to me.

Sounds like you have added feature classes from the drawing that have no
enities in them. In the drawing you attached to your original post. Only the
Polyline Feature Class had anything in it. If you open the attribute table
for it you will see the table with all the information.

ESRI has a couple of free online classes about using CAD data in ArcGIS you
might find helpful. Here are the links:
http://training.esri.com/acb2000/showdetl.cfm?DID=6&Product_ID=887
http://training.esri.com/acb2000/showdetl.cfm?DID=6&Product_ID=832

Since GIS is new to you, you might want to consider taking the ArcGIS
Desktop I: Getting to know GIS class or similiar class. The ArcGIS Desktop I
class is a two class which covers the basic ideas, terminology and concepts
behind GIS and some of the simple functions of ArcGIS software.

Tripp,

Thanks for your help, again. I have actually done the beginning online classes, but nothing I have seen has addressed AutoCad issues either on Autodesk.com or ESRI.com. Most of my cad data has been given to me, this is the first time I've had to create a dwg and use in ArcGIS. Again, thanks for your help.

If you want you can contact me offline and we might be able to arrange some
one on one online training. You can contact me at tcorbin at keckwood.com.

Try saving the dwg as a 2004 version, I think the ArcGIS version you are
using can not use the 2007/8/9 version of AutoCAD dwg format.

Murph,
ArcGIS 9.2 and 9.3 will read the current DWG format without any problem. Older versions of ArcGIS can not read the current version.

Right, I tried Jreed's dwg in 9.1 and was seeing the same results he was.
Saved his dwg to 2004 format and it worked as expected in 9.1. Without
knowing what version he is using the save as 2004 might be his problem.

jreed,
What version of ArcView are you using? If you are using version 9.2 you can right mouse click on the layer that makes up the DWG, and there should be a tab that is named "LAYERS" you can manipulate the dwg there. If you use the mapexport command, just beware that sometimes this will cause the shapefile that it creates as well as all of the other shapefiles the the target file folder to become corrupted. You'll know if this happens when you get a fatal error when trying to export the shape from autocad. Best of luck.

Currently ArcGIS will not read the 2010 format. ESRI says that they are working on the problem. Anyone working in 2010 will have to save their work back to a previous format for ArcGIS users to bring the dwg into their systems.
