AecObjExplode Layers - adding alot of mb to file size

I'm not sure exactly why, but most of my drawing files are over 10mb, which is certainly not normal. I think I've narrowed it down to these AEC Object layers. We were using '04 and are now using '08. In the layer list, there are probably 50 layers that begin with AecObjExplode. They are all on in paper space. I want to get rid of these, as I think they are the reason for the added file size. I've tried purging and the aecobjexplode command and nothing has helped. Is there a way to get rid of these? Where do these layers come from?

nothing worked. I had purged previously. Here is some info I found out:

after the purge command, I selected "View Items you cannot purge". Under blocks and layers, all of those AecObjExplode items are listed. I expanded blocks and selected one of the above items. The following is displayed:

"This block definition cannot be purged if:
-It is nested inside another block
-It is inserted in the drawing.
-It is an attached xref drawing."

I don't think it's 3 because we don't use xrefs. It's either 1 or 2.

when I expand Layers, the reason is "this layer cannot be purged if it contains objects."

Did you try the command line version of purge with the Regapps option?

Try drawing a line on one of the offending layers, set layer zero current &
type LAYDEL. Select the line & see if it allows you to delta the layer.

Search Google for AutoCAD Super Purge.

I know this is no help to you, but for what it is worth I am having the same problem with dwgs that I get from engineering firms using LDT 2008. I have opened them in both LDT 2008 and also Civil 3D but cant figure out where the AEC Object Explode layers are coming from. This Engineering firm also uses Microstation. There are layers in the dwg named 13, 36 etc. so that leads me to believe that Inroads has been used.

AecObeject layers will not purge -

for AutoCad 2013:

draw a line on each of the offending layers,

then make sure you have your current layer set to zero

type LAYDEL,

select all lines on the AecObject layers

(select yes to continue)

purge and

the AecObj... layers are gone

thanks for the info below!

I am just adding a little more to roney75 solution.  This is if you end up with many layers.

1. Open the drawing, select model space.

2. Change current layer to one of the "AecObjExplode_etc,etc"  layers

3. Draw a line any place in model space on that layer

4. Change current layer to "0"

5. Put in command "laydel" select the line you put on that "Aec" layer

6. On the command line you will see:  "Select object on layer to delete or [Name/Undo]:" at this point put in "n" for Name

7. A dialog box will show up with all layers. Select the ones to be deleted and this should take care of the items the purge is missing.

8. Important: Purge drawing then save. Objects will not be gone unless final purge is complete.Laydel_dcl_purgeproblem.png
