Adding Breakliines to Surface

I am having touble adding breaklines to a surface. I am using the define by polyline command but nothing seems to happen. I created the breaklines through the "create by 3d poyline curb" command. The original breakline I am starting with was created using cl profile points.

Any Ideas?

Hey Steveb77;

I'm thinking that if you have the Terrain Model Explorer dialog box open on
your desktop, and have already checked the "Total # of breaklines" display
to determine that these Breaklines that you chose were not added to the
Total, you have a distinct problem.

You could also let us know which release you are using - as the 2007 release
is fairly fraught with all different sorts of these type issues.

I suspected that. Do you recomend using 2006 until a service pack is available? I tried to use 2006 but LD would not start due to later version items in the drawing file......

Yes as I have used 2K6 since the Service Pack was released;

..about 2/3's of the way down the list for 2K6 steveblais.

I found a workaround yesterday by searching the newsgroup.

> Create a surface
> add a point group
> build the surface
> delete the point group
> you can now add your breaklines and rebuild the surface.

Kind of silly that you need to take the extra step but it works.

Seems like Autodesk is slowly causing more and more problems with each
release of Land Desktop. Maybe they are trying to force us to make the move
to C3D.

"Encourage" might be the word the Deskers would choose. 😉

That makes sense as I could add breaklines to an already defined surface but not a new, undefined one.

Thanks for sharing you experiences. Now, I can go back to being sane again.

The issue that really bites me is that we pay hard earned money for these
new releases to work. Why is there not a patch available yet? Do we get a
discount on our subscription fees for a percentage of the software that does
not work? I hit a brick wall trying to get answers from Autodesk.
SDSK 10 worked...on 4 megs of ram!!!!

So Randy, can we surmise that you wish to go back to the days of 4MB of RAM?
:-o

Or just the days when the SW would perform admirably?

I'm thinking it would naturally be the latter.

And just to garner further data on LDT's un-finished descendant...
C3D follows somewhat closely on the heels of LDT in this particular respect
in your opinion, or is it getting better along those lines?

We have yet to dive into Civil 3D much. The 2007 version does seem to be
closer to a usable product although if it was a total package Autodesk would
not have had to release a LDT Companion package. But since they did release
an LDT package you would expect it to perform at least as well as the
previous version. If you can't even generate a basic stakeout without having
to edit the point file......or create a surface from contours or fault lines
without adding a bunch of fix it steps......
Actually my favorite release so far has been 2006. it loaded flawlessly and
performed very well. And no I don't miss my first 286 Kapro computer with a
moncrome screen.
I think Autodesk painted themselves into a corner trying to do a new
release every year and quality has suffered. Do you think we will get a
pro-rated refund?

I am about to renew my subscription soon for a good bit of money in order to have the latest and "greatest" software from AutoDesk. It does not seem to make sense. I spent some considerable time trying to figure out what I was screwing up when I couldn't add breaklines to a surface (the start of this discussion). I almost went crazy.

Then I find out it a "glitch" in the program. I almost feel Autodesk should compensate me for billable time I lost.

Hi Steve,
As hard as it is to admit it you are pretty much screwed into keep your
subscription updated. In the old days your software had value and could be
sold/transfered to a new owner. Now if you don't keep up Autodesk will
retire older versions leaving you sucking wind. I guess the best thing to do
it get the newer version and wait a year for all of the patches come out.
If you bought a new car under the Autodesk terms and the car ran like LDT7
you would have lines of customers beating the dealers doors down.
Maybe all LDT7 users should first give their supplier a call then contact
the Autodesk Business Center. With a little volume we might get a better
response than "call your retailer".

The Kaypro was one of the kings of its days!

Refund?

Do you think that's even a part of the Deskers vocabulary? 😉

Maybe when they're off the clock - and they're sure there's no "listening
devices" nearby.

Ms. Judge and Mr. Kent may have other ideas. They are the Desker
representatives in residence looking into our issues relating to 2K7.

They have been here quite often in the past few weeks doing their darndest
to get the data they find necessary to get the Service Pack out to their
customers (us) just as quickly as they can.
