Shape insertion point is offset from shape

I am using the mkshape command to create shapes for use in complex linetypes: After I create a shape, load, issue a shape command to place it, the insertion point always ends up offset from the shape by a small amount. I wish that there was a way to designate the exact location on the shape that is will define the begining of the repeating pattern to be used in the complex linetype. This offset is introducing unwanted space into the repeating pattern, which is ruining the purpose of the shape.
