PLC I/O Utility and Custom Blocks

I'm learning the PLC I/O Utility. It works quite well, but I'm having an issue when I call for custom blocks I have made that have points meant to connect to the (i.e. common) buss. An example would be a 3 wire Photo Eye. For some reason the utility wants to attach a wire to that point, and connect it to the first rung on that device. After that the utility gives up. Circuit builder says my Electrical Blocks are good. I've tried a few different ones with the same results (once the device landed in space - up above the border) I tried putting an asterisk ahead of the device, then everything goes smoothly except my device is exploded (not helpful)!

Any help greatly appreciated - I must be doing something wrong!

Update -

Capturing the unruly connections as a circuit fixed the issue
